Duties and Responsibilities

​The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. Numerous additional intergovernmental instruments on migratory species conservation have been adopted under the broad umbrella of CMS which are supported by the CMS Secretariat. The CMS Secretariat also provides the Secretariat for the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS). In addition, two regional agreements on migratory species adopted under CMS have their own Secretariats which are co-located with the CMS Secretariat in Bonn - the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and the Agreement on the Conservation of European Populations of Bats(EUROBATS). The Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS) provides a framework for international cooperation for the conservation of European bat populations across their range. It supports its Parties in implementing measures for the protection of bats and their habitats, including through conservation action, research, monitoring, public awareness and the exchange of scientific and technical information. The Agreement was concluded under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and forms part of the CMS Family. EUROBATS currently has 39 Parties and protects 55 bat species occurring in the Agreement area.​ The EUROBATS Secretariat is located at the United Nations premises in Bonn, Germany, together with the Secretariats of CMS and several of its Agreements. This is an in-person internship, but applicants may be requested on an exceptional basis to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel or access to UN premises. The internship is unpaid.​ ​​This internship is conducted within the EUROBATS Secretariat. The intern will support the Secretariat in communication and outreach activities, meeting preparation, document management and campaign-related work, including activities linked to the International Bat Night campaign. One full-time position is available for the duration of six months. The internship position should start on 1st of July 2026 and end on 31st of December 2026.​ ​​Under the supervision of EUROBATS Executive Secretary, and in cooperation with other members of the team, the intern will perform a selection of the following tasks. These duties are not all-inclusive: ​- Assist the EUROBATS Secretariat in the development and implementation of communication and outreach activities, including support for the establishment and regular maintenance of EUROBATS social media channels. - ​Support the preparation of communication content for the EUROBATS website and other channels, including drafting short articles, news items, event announcements and social media posts. - Assist with the International Bat Night campaign, including maintaining and updating website content, publishing submitted events, liaising with event organisers, and coordinating the shipment of information material. - Support dissemination of information materials, publications and outreach products. - ​Support the preparation of templates and formatting of official EUROBATS documents, including draft resolutions, information and other meeting documents. - Assist in the practical preparation of EUROBATS 10th Session of the meeting of the Parties, including the preparation of information documents and other logistical materials. - Support the compilation, maintenance and updating of contact lists, mailing lists, meeting registration lists and other databases used by the Secretariat. - ​Perform any other tasks as requested by the Secretariat.​y the Secretariat.​

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or c. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b)) and must commence the internship within a one year of graduation. Preferred area of study: A degree programme in communications, media studies, public relations or journalism, and other social sciences, including sociology, political science and environmental studies, as well as in the areas of information and knowledge management, or a related field. It is highly desirable for candidates to have one or more of the following competencies. The presentation of samples of previous work in these areas would support the assessment of candidates: • Experience with website content management systems and the preparation of web content. • Experience in preparing and managing social media content, including drafting posts and adapting content for different platforms. • Basic skills in graphic design, layout or the preparation of visual communication materials. • Experience with video editing, image editing or other multimedia tools would be an asset. Further desirable competencies include: • Very good skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, including formatting, templates, tables and document layout. • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work carefully, consistently and accurately on communication and document-related tasks. Candidates with the following interests are highly desirable: Have a keen interest in environmental issues, with a particular focus on wildlife and/or nature conservation from an international perspective. Have a keen interest in communications and the work of the United Nations and international relations. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Writing skills and ability to draft news articles and social media posts for general audience is desired. Languages

English is the working languages of the EUROBATS Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.​
