University degree requirements in UN vacancies

UN vacancies distinguish advanced and first-level degrees, accepted fields and limited substitutions. The wording in the opening controls eligibility.

A UN vacancy’s education section has several moving parts: degree level, field of study, completion status and any permitted substitution. Meeting one part does not compensate for another unless the opening says so.

The rule in a UN Secretariat notice belongs to that job. Funds, programmes, specialized agencies and international organizations can use different degree frameworks.

Advanced and first-level degrees

For Professional and Director posts, the UN Careers description says an advanced university degree is normally required. Many openings allow a first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience.

An advanced degree generally refers to a qualification beyond the first university degree, such as a master’s degree or a recognized equivalent. A first-level degree normally corresponds to an undergraduate university qualification.

Degree names and national systems vary. Applicants should enter the formal award and institution, not rename it to resemble a US or European credential. The organization decides equivalence under its procedures.

The extra-experience alternative

A common Secretariat formula accepts a first-level degree plus additional qualifying work experience instead of the advanced degree. The vacancy states the amount and nature of the additional experience.

This is an alternative route, not a relaxation of every education requirement. The first-level degree must still meet the accepted field condition unless the notice provides another option. The extra years must be relevant and documented.

A candidate with an unrelated bachelor’s degree and many years of general work may still fail a notice requiring law, engineering or economics. The experience substitute concerns degree level, not necessarily field.

Some specialist positions do not allow substitution. The UN Careers page notes that medical and certain other professions can require a specific advanced qualification. Language positions can use different standards.

Accepted fields of study

Read connectors carefully. “Law, public administration, political science or a related field” gives a broader set than “law.” “Engineering with a specialization in civil engineering” is narrower than “engineering.”

A related field should have a clear connection to the duties. Use the application to show relevant coursework only when the system or recruiter requests it. A motivation statement cannot change the degree awarded.

Interdisciplinary degrees can qualify when their formal content falls within the accepted area. If the title is unfamiliar, provide the official field and requested supporting documents rather than asserting equivalence.

Completion and timing

The opening usually requires that the degree be completed by the closing date or another stated point. Current enrolment does not equal completion.

Enter award date and expected completion accurately. A transcript showing finished coursework may not replace the formal degree if the institution has not conferred it and the vacancy requires an awarded qualification.

For internships, academic eligibility is different. The Secretariat accepts specified enrolled students and recent graduates under its internship rules. That does not establish eligibility for a staff post.

Accreditation and verification

The application can ask whether the institution is recognized and may use an external higher-education database. Supply the institution’s official name, campus and country.

Keep the degree certificate and transcript. Documents in another language may need an official or certified translation according to the recruiting organization’s instructions.

A professional licence, bar admission or chartered status is separate from the university degree. When both are required, one does not replace the other.

False or altered educational records can lead to withdrawal of selection and integrity consequences. If a national qualification is difficult to classify, describe it accurately and allow the organization to decide.

Certificates and short courses

A project-management, procurement, audit, technology or language certificate can support an application. It is not a university degree unless the awarding institution and qualification formally make it one.

The vacancy may list a certificate as required or desirable. “Desirable” does not create a screening bar, though it can inform comparative evaluation. “Required” needs evidence by the stated date.

Massive open online courses and attendance certificates belong in training fields where relevant. Filling the education section with minor courses can make the main qualification harder to find.

A practical eligibility check

Copy the education sentence and mark degree level, field, substitution, professional credential and completion date. Test the application against each part.

If using the first-degree alternative, identify the additional experience and verify that it is relevant, non-overlapping and visible in employment entries. Do not assume the system will infer it.

Where the wording remains unclear, ask the official recruiting contact before the deadline. The hiring office cannot rewrite eligibility for an individual applicant, but it may clarify what its published terms mean.
