The United Nations Information Centre in Manama (UNIC Manama) is seeking an Intern in Public Information to support strategic communications and public engagement efforts across Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Reporting to the Director of UNIC Manama, the intern will assist in promoting the UN's aims and activities to local audiences. Key responsibilities include creating content for online platforms and social media, monitoring and moderating digital channels, implementing social media campaigns, designing and disseminating information materials, organizing events and meetings, preparing media monitoring reports, and providing translation support. The role is designed to be up to 34 hours per week with a hybrid work arrangement (remote or in-person) for a duration of three to six months. The ideal candidate is currently enrolled in or has completed a graduate school programme or the final year of a first university degree (minimum Bachelor's level). The position requires computer literacy, a keen interest in the UN's work, and the ability to interact effectively with diverse cultural backgrounds. Fluency in both spoken and written English and Arabic is mandatory. This is an unpaid internship where the intern is responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre in Manama (UNIC Manama), within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Department of Global Communications.

UNIC Manama is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Bahrain; it provides strategic communications services to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. It is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by communicating the work of the UN to a local audience in local languages; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the peoples it serves.

The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Director, UNIC Manama. The internship is for three (3) months up to a maximum of six (6) months depending on the availability of the intern and needs of the department. The internship is designed to be up to 34 hours per week with a hybrid work arrangement (remote or in-person).

Responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office, as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Assist in content creation for the UNIC's online platforms, including social media accounts.

- Assist in monitoring and moderating the UNIC's online platforms, including social media and in implementing social media campaigns.

- Assist in the design, production, and dissemination of information material.

- Assist in the organization of events and meetings.

- Assist in preparing media monitoring reports.

- Assist in translation support.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Information Centre, the following conditions must be met:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

- Be computer literate in standard software applications; - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required.
