UN application status and recruitment timelines in Inspira

Inspira status labels show broad process stages, not a countdown. Recruitment length varies with assessments, approvals, rosters and the hiring office.

UN Secretariat recruitment can take months, and the status shown in Inspira often changes less frequently than candidates expect. The label records a broad stage. It does not reveal shortlist rank, interview score or an expected decision date.

The official applicant guide defines the main status labels. Those definitions are more reliable than interpretations shared in applicant forums.

Draft and Applied

“Draft” means an application was started but not submitted. A draft receives no consideration. Check the closing time and complete submission before the deadline.

“Applied” means the application was submitted and is being screened through Inspira. The system and recruiting office may review basic eligibility, required qualifications and other rules.

An Applied status can remain for some time. It does not confirm that a human reviewer has shortlisted the candidate, and it is not a rejection.

Under Consideration

“Under Consideration” means the application has passed the system screening stage and the recruitment process is continuing. It does not mean that an interview invitation is certain.

Hiring managers evaluate released applications against the criteria in the opening and create a shortlist. Depending on the process, shortlisted candidates can receive a written exercise, technical test, recorded interview, presentation, knowledge-based interview or competency-based interview.

Some candidates who are never contacted for an assessment can remain Under Consideration until the exercise closes. The status is too broad to support a prediction about rank.

Recruitment Completed and JO Cancelled

“Recruitment Completed” means the process finished with another applicant selected. The system may update only after required approvals and notifications.

“JO Cancelled” means the opening was cancelled. Funding, restructuring, changed operational need or an administrative decision can lead to cancellation. The label does not imply that the candidate failed an assessment.

A reposted job should be treated as a new opening unless the recruiting office says otherwise. Application materials do not automatically carry forward.

Rostered, Selected and Filled from Roster

“Rostered” means the applicant was recommended but not selected for that opening and was placed on a roster under the applicable scope.

“Selected” means the applicant was chosen. The applicant guide says selected candidates are notified by email and must confirm continued interest and availability within the period in the notice.

“Filled from Roster” identifies a selection made through roster status. The new appointment still follows clearances and offer procedures.

None of these labels should be inferred from an informal message. Wait for the official communication and confirm that it refers to the correct job opening number.

Why timelines vary

The number of eligible applicants, assessment design, panel availability, central review, reference checks, budget approval and the urgency of the office can all affect timing. A roster-based selection may be shorter than a full competitive process, while a senior or highly specialized post can take longer.

The vacancy’s closing date is the start of the selection work, not an expected offer date. A temporary need can move quickly, but the word “temporary” provides no guaranteed timeline.

Public holidays, emergencies and changes in the hiring office can pause activity without producing a status update.

Contact and follow-up

Assessment invitations normally give a contact address and deadline. Use that address for technical problems or an accommodation request.

For a general status inquiry, check whether the vacancy or applicant guide provides a channel. Repeated messages to staff members named in the organizational chart rarely accelerate the process and can reach people outside the selection team.

If another offer requires a decision, candidates can state the deadline politely to the official recruiting contact. The UN office may be unable to change its schedule, so personal planning should account for that possibility.

What to do while waiting

Keep applying for other suitable vacancies. An Under Consideration status is not a reason to stop a search.

Monitor the email address in the profile, including spam and filtered folders. Keep work certificates, degree records, references and identification available for later checks.

Save the job description and the submitted application. If invited to an assessment after several months, those documents show the criteria and examples used at the time of application.

Status labels answer a narrow administrative question. They should not be used to estimate odds or to make financial decisions before a written offer exists.
