Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the Chinese Unit, News Section II, News and Content Branch, News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications. The News and Content Branch is primarily a multimedia service provided by the United Nations to promote the universal ideals of the United Nations, including peace, respect for human rights and developments. It produces a range of news / feature stories, audio, video and multimedia products across nine languages available to media organizations around the world.

The Unit is looking for interns who wish to gain hands-on experience in a multilingual UN newsroom, particularly in the production of news, feature stories, short-form videos and multimedia content for Chinese-speaking audiences.

The duration of the internship is for a minimum (4) months with a possibility of extension up to (6) months. This internship is UNPAID, in person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premises, with a working arrangement from (New York, USA). This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote.

The intern's duties may include:

• Drafting Chinese news articles by integrating and translating information from reports, press releases, official statements, resolutions and other UN materials.
• Translating English video scripts, captions and other editorial content into Chinese.
• Proofreading and fact-checking Chinese-language content before publication.
• Conducting background research and assisting with editorial planning.
• Assisting in the production of videos, social media content and multimedia storytelling projects.
• Conducting interviews and supporting field reporting assignments.
• Filming and editing short-form videos for social media platforms.
• Assisting with audience engagement and outreach activities.
• Participating in editorial meetings and contributing story ideas.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, Department of Global Communications, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, English or translation studies (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, English or translation studies (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). 2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Desired Qualifications

• Excellent written Chinese and strong English-language skills.
• Demonstrated interest in journalism, international affairs and United Nations issues.
• Experience with video shooting and editing software.
• Ability to independently conduct interviews and produce multimedia content.
• Strong understanding of social media trends and digital storytelling.
• On-camera presentation or hosting experience is desirable but not required.

Languages

English or French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship advertised, fluency in both English and Chinese is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
