Working at WMO: scientific careers, local support and consultancies

WMO recruits international scientific and professional staff, locally recruited General Service staff and consultants for defined assignments.

7

WMO’s Secretariat brings together scientific, policy and operational expertise on weather, climate and water. Its public careers pages give detailed category requirements but do not publish a single comprehensive chart mapping every appointment and consultancy form.

Where WMO does not provide that mapping publicly, the vacancy’s Nature of Appointment field is the correct source.

Professional and senior staff

WMO’s Professional staff page lists P-1 through P-5 and D-1 through D-2. Professional staff are internationally recruited for headquarters in Geneva, regional offices and representative offices.

WMO publishes standard requirements beginning at P-2 with two years of relevant experience and a master’s degree or equivalent. P-3 normally requires five years, P-4 seven and P-5 ten. D-1 requires at least 15 years and D-2 more than 15. A bachelor’s degree plus two additional years can sometimes replace the master’s requirement.

A vacancy can require scientific credentials, professional certification or experience beyond those baselines. WMO’s working languages are English and French, with the notice stating the precise language level.

Directors manage substantial scientific or administrative programmes and resources. The D label should not be used casually for a senior consultant who does not hold a Director staff post.

General Service staff

General Service staff are recruited in the duty-station country or within commuting distance, regardless of nationality. Candidates need legal residence in the country.

GS work is procedural, operational or technical and ranges from routine support to complex specialized assignments. A high-school diploma or equivalent is required, while experience and language requirements come from the vacancy.

WMO’s current public category page does not set out a universal GS-to-consultant equivalence. A consultant working on administration does not automatically hold a G grade.

Appointment and consultancy terminology

WMO vacancies state a Nature of Appointment, duration and grade where applicable. Staff opportunities can be fixed-term or short-term under WMO’s Staff Regulations and internal instructions. The public careers overview does not supply enough current detail to promise a standard initial term across all vacancies, so applicants should use the notice and offer.

WMO also engages national and international consultants through Special Service Agreement vacancy notices. These assignments identify days, outputs, location and contract conditions. A current SSA number or a consultant label indicates non-staff work, not a Professional appointment.

The organization uses interns and donor-sponsored JPOs under separate programmes. JPO is a sponsorship route, and internship status is distinct from both staff and consultancy.

A position connected with a WMO project can be staff or non-staff. Project funding alone does not determine the contract.

Main job families

Scientific roles cover meteorology, climatology, operational hydrology, ocean observation, atmospheric composition, satellite systems and weather forecasting. Data and observing-system specialists work on standards, quality, exchange and infrastructure linking national services.

Climate services, disaster risk reduction and Early Warnings for All create policy, programme and project posts. Other technical work covers aviation and marine meteorology, agricultural meteorology, cryosphere, research coordination and capacity development.

WMO recruits specialists who can work with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and Member governments. Experience in a research institution is useful, but some roles require operational service delivery or intergovernmental coordination.

Supporting job families include information technology, data platforms, legal affairs, external relations, communications, conference management, translation, finance, procurement, human resources and administration.

International and local recruitment

P and D staff are internationally recruited. GS positions require local residence and fall within the commuting-area rule. A consultant notice states whether recruitment is national or international and whether work is home-based.

Home-based does not settle tax, travel or time-zone conditions. The SSA or consultancy notice should be read for those points.

Applying

WMO publishes openings through its jobs page and linked Oracle e-recruitment system. Candidates must create a profile and submit online. WMO does not accept paper or email applications.

Applications are screened from the profile, so employment dates, degrees and languages must be complete before submission. The current FAQ states that a submitted application cannot be edited; candidates must withdraw and resubmit before the deadline if changes are needed.

For technical roles, identify observing systems, models, datasets, operational services or standards used. For programme roles, describe work with national services, governments and funded projects.

WMO charges no recruitment fee and does not ask for bank-account information during selection. Before accepting, confirm grade, Nature of Appointment, duration and staff or SSA status.
