UN job assessments: written tests, case studies, presentations and work samples

UN assessments vary by vacancy. Candidates may face a timed written exercise, technical test, case study, presentation, work sample or recorded interview.

There is no standard written test used for every UN job. The assessment is designed around the vacancy’s evaluation criteria and can use several formats.

The UN Careers assessment page lists written tests through the UN Online Examinations and Tests System, prerecorded video interviews, work samples and assessment centres among the possible methods. Tests can examine technical knowledge, drafting, language, reasoning, situational judgment, integrity or other job-related areas.

Start with the vacancy

Save the full opening when applying. Its responsibilities, required experience, competencies and technical qualifications form the assessment syllabus.

A Finance and Budget Officer may receive a budget-analysis case. A Human Rights Officer may be asked to analyse a scenario and draft a note. A communications candidate may prepare copy or a campaign plan. Technology posts can include coding, architecture or incident-response tasks.

Do not study the entire subject area indiscriminately. Identify the products the job produces and the decisions it makes.

Follow the invitation exactly

Assessment invitations specify platform, date, time zone, duration, permitted materials and response method. Missing a deadline or ignoring an instruction can lead to disqualification. The Secretariat applicant guide states that candidates should respond promptly and follow all assessment instructions.

Check the time zone by converting it in advance. Test the required browser, camera, microphone and connection. Arrange a quiet room and power backup where practical. If the organization offers a system check, complete it on the device that will be used.

Contact the named office before the deadline if a documented accessibility accommodation is needed. Do not wait until the assessment has begun.

Timed written exercises

A written exercise often tests prioritization as well as subject knowledge. Read the full task, note each requested output and allocate time. A short answer that responds to every part can score better than a polished introduction followed by an unfinished analysis.

Use the format requested. A briefing note, email, talking points and report are different products. Identify the audience, decision and word limit before writing.

Ground recommendations in the facts supplied. State assumptions only when the exercise leaves a necessary gap. Do not invent data, policies or stakeholder views to make the answer look complete.

Leave time to check names, figures, headings and attachments. In a multilingual assessment, follow the language instruction for each component.

Technical tests and case studies

Technical tests can ask for calculations, code, legal analysis, editing, translation, design or a work plan. Show enough method for an assessor to understand the result, unless the instruction asks only for a final answer.

For a case study, separate facts, analysis, options and recommendation. Explain trade-offs that matter to the mandate, resources and rules in the scenario. Generic management slogans consume time without demonstrating judgment.

Use the organization’s official rules only when materials are permitted or provided. Memorizing an obsolete policy can be worse than stating the relevant principle carefully.

Presentations and work samples

A presentation assessment may test analysis, structure, timing and response to questions. Design for the allotted minutes. Each slide should support the requested decision or explanation.

A portfolio should follow the requested file type and content limits. Identify the candidate’s contribution to team work. Do not submit confidential material from a current or former employer without authorization.

If a new work sample is requested, apply the same integrity rules as a written test. Reusing another person’s work, concealed assistance or unauthorized tools can end the candidacy.

Recorded interviews

An asynchronous interview gives a prompt and a fixed preparation or recording period. Practise answering within that limit without reading a script. Look at the camera, give a direct answer and use one relevant example.

The format may assess technical knowledge or competencies. Prepare examples from the application, but listen for the exact question before choosing one.

Integrity and confidentiality

The applicant guide states that cheating leads to disqualification. Use only permitted resources and assistance. Rules on generative AI, calculators, reference material and collaboration belong to the specific assessment and should be followed as written.

Do not publish test questions afterward. Recruitment exercises and candidate responses may be confidential.

Preparation works best when it resembles the job: review official products from the hiring office, practise producing the named format under time, and check work against the vacancy’s criteria.
