Working at the International Trade Centre

The International Trade Centre is a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. Its governance is shared, but its staff conditions are governed by the United Nations Staff Regulations and Staff Rules. Staff vacancies are published through UN Careers and applications are made in Inspira.

This is worth stating plainly because “joint agency” does not mean that applicants choose between a UN contract and a WTO contract. The formal ITC vacancy sets the employment terms.

Staff categories and appointments

ITC uses the UN common-system categories familiar from the Secretariat. Internationally recruited Professional and Director posts use P and D grades. General Service jobs use G grades and are locally recruited, principally at ITC’s Geneva headquarters. National Professional Officer posts may appear for country-based work when the official notice provides for them.

The grade describes the level of the post. It does not establish duration. ITC advertises fixed-term and temporary appointments under the UN Staff Regulations and Rules. A fixed-term post normally has an initial term stated in the vacancy, often one year for project-funded roles. Renewal depends on continuing mandate, funding, performance and organisational need; it is not guaranteed.

Temporary appointments meet short-term requirements. Their exact advertised duration must be checked. A temporary G-5 and a fixed-term G-5 share a grade but not the same appointment outlook.

Some vacancies use the phrase “fixed-term appointment limited” or state that service is limited to ITC. That limitation matters. It can affect how the post is administered and what happens if its funding or mandate ends. Read the special notice rather than assuming that every UN fixed-term post is interchangeable.

ITC’s audited reporting confirms that the organisation is subject to the UN Staff Regulations and Staff Rules, alongside UN financial and oversight arrangements.

Consultants, contractors and internships

ITC engages international and national consultants for trade-related advice, research, training, evaluation and project delivery. It also uses individual contractors for defined support. These are non-staff arrangements. A consultancy may be described by a level or daily fee, but that is not a P grade and does not provide staff status.

Country projects can be administered with support from UNDP. If a vacancy says that the selected ITC personnel will be administered through UNDP, the notice should explain the appointment and conditions. Applicants should identify both the substantive office and the administrative arrangement.

Internships are offered in programme and support teams. They are not P-1 or P-2 appointments. JPOs and government-sponsored personnel can also work at ITC under their programme terms.

Career fields

ITC’s work is aimed at improving the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises and connecting them to international markets. Programme roles cover export strategy, trade facilitation, market analysis, quality infrastructure, e-commerce, digital trade, sustainable value chains, women’s economic empowerment and youth entrepreneurship.

Trade information specialists work with market data and analytical tools. Project managers coordinate donors, governments, business-support organisations and companies across countries. Other teams focus on communications, partnerships, evaluation, procurement, finance, human resources, legal matters and information technology.

Private-sector experience can be highly relevant, especially when it involves small businesses, supply chains or financial and market services. Applicants still need to demonstrate work at the grade and scale required. A strong commercial background may need to be paired with development cooperation, public accountability or experience working across institutions.

The application route

ITC staff openings appear on UN Careers under “International Trade Centre.” Applicants complete their profiles and submit through Inspira. Official ITC internship or consultancy announcements may also be linked from the ITC website; follow the submission method stated in the notice.

Check the job opening number, category, grade, appointment type, duty station and special notice. For General Service posts, confirm authorization to work in Switzerland or the relevant local duty station. For project roles, note whether the appointment is limited and how long funding is confirmed.

ITC recruitment does not charge a fee. A legitimate vacancy will point to an official ITC, UN Careers or Inspira page.

The useful rule is that joint governance describes ITC’s institutional home. It does not create a hybrid grade. Staff use the UN framework; consultants and other non-staff personnel use the contract expressly offered to them.
