IMF contracts and grades: A01 to B05 explained

How IMF staff, contractual and programme appointments differ, what the A01–B05 grade scale covers and how applicants should read salary information.

The IMF publishes more information about its grade structure than many international financial institutions. That helps, but the title of a vacancy still needs to be read alongside its appointment type, grade and recruitment stream.

The Fund recruits economists, lawyers, accountants, financial-sector specialists, statisticians, technology professionals, communications staff and administrative support. It also has entry programmes with terms that do not apply to ordinary vacancies.

Staff, contractual and programme appointments

According to the IMF’s compensation and benefits page, a new staff member normally receives an initial appointment of up to three years. Depending on the Fund’s needs and the person’s performance, that appointment may be extended or converted to a regular appointment of indefinite duration. The wording matters: a possible conversion is not a guarantee.

Contractual appointments cover work for a defined period and can accumulate to no more than four years. Their benefits depend on the length and terms of the contract. They should not be treated as interchangeable with staff appointments merely because the work is full-time.

The Economist Program is a separate early-career route for recent PhD graduates. Research Analyst positions support economic research and analysis. The Fund also recruits through the Experienced Economist pipeline, the Fund Internship Program, the Economic Analyst Program and specialized or administrative streams. The Find the right IMF job page is the best starting point because it separates these routes instead of presenting them as one contract type.

The A and B grade structure

The IMF’s public salary table runs from A01 to B05. In the 2025 annual report tables, A01 through A08 cover support staff, A09 through A15 cover professional staff, and B01 through B05 cover managerial staff.

The table also provides illustrative titles. An entry-level economist or counsel appears at A11. Division chief and advisor titles appear around A15 or B01, while B05 is used for director-level work. These examples are useful orientation, not a licence to re-grade a vacancy from its title. The grade printed in the notice is authoritative.

Salary bands have a minimum and maximum in annual US dollars. The ranges are revised, so quoting an old number from a forum can be misleading. Use the latest annual report or the salary information linked from the IMF recruitment site. Placement within a range is determined under Fund rules and is not simply the number a candidate requests.

Location, nationality and job families

Most IMF staff work at headquarters in Washington, DC, although the Fund also has regional offices and resident representative posts. The duty station affects practical questions such as relocation, visa status and whether recruitment is local.

The IMF states that support staff, apart from the Research Analyst Program, are recruited locally from the Washington metropolitan area. Candidates for those positions should not assume an expatriate package.

For eligible staff whose primary nationality is that of an IMF member country, the Fund can support G-4 visa processing. Visa eligibility and employment eligibility are related but distinct; the US authorities make the visa decision. The Life at the IMF page sets out the current framework.

Economics is the largest visible professional stream, but not the only one. The Fund hires in fiscal affairs, monetary and capital markets, statistics, legal work, finance, risk, human resources, facilities, procurement, communications and information technology.

Application and compensation

Applications go through the official IMF recruitment site. Selection may include screening, technical assessments, interviews and reference or background checks. Economist recruitment can involve technical interviews and written work; another job family may use a different sequence.

Read an offer in this order: grade, appointment category, duration, duty station, base salary and benefits eligibility. The IMF benchmarks compensation against relevant markets and offers benefits that may include medical coverage, leave, retirement and, for eligible internationally recruited staff, expatriate provisions. A contractual appointment can have a different package from a staff appointment at comparable responsibility. The vacancy and written offer settle that question.
