CAF careers, contracts and job levels: a guide for applicants

How to separate CAF staff vacancies, internships, individual consultancies and procurement calls without inventing a public grade system.

CAF, Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, is a multilateral development bank owned by countries and financial institutions. It is not part of the United Nations and does not use UN Staff Regulations or UN P and G grades. That is the first point to settle before comparing one of its vacancies with jobs at other international organizations.

Staff vacancies and project calls are different

CAF’s work with us section separates current employment opportunities, the internship programme, calls and bids. A position in the careers system is a potential employment relationship with CAF. A call may seek an individual consultant, research proposal or specialist service. A bid usually procures services from a firm. These routes have different application documents, evaluation methods and legal terms.

The contract type and duration for a staff role are given in the vacancy and eventual offer. CAF does not publish a complete candidate-facing table of all employment contracts, grades and salary ranges. It also does not provide a reliable public conversion between titles and a universal level. Applicants should not turn “executive,” “principal,” “senior specialist,” “officer” or “analyst” into an assumed UN or World Bank grade.

Consulting opportunities can be advertised through the calls page. The notice may ask for a technical proposal, fee, availability and evidence of regional experience. Consultants do not become CAF employees because they work inside a CAF-supported project. Bids for institutional services should likewise not be submitted as personal job applications.

Internships

The CAF internship programme is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students who contribute to projects aligned with the Bank’s strategic agenda under professional supervision. A live internship announcement is the authority for eligible universities or fields, required student status, location, duration, working hours, stipend and work permission.

An internship should not be described as the Bank’s lowest staff grade. It is a separate early-career arrangement. Participation can build relevant experience, but it does not promise later appointment. Calls for research awards or young-professional activities may have their own sponsorship rules and are not necessarily employment either.

Where CAF works

CAF’s headquarters is in Caracas, and it has offices across Latin America and the Caribbean as well as in Europe. A regional mandate does not make every vacancy internationally mobile. Some roles are recruited for a named office and may depend on residence, nationality, language or work authorization. The vacancy must be read for those conditions.

Spanish is central to much of the Bank’s work. Portuguese, English and other languages can be required or advantageous depending on the portfolio and office. Applicants should state their working proficiency accurately rather than assuming that English alone is sufficient at a Latin American development bank.

Job families include sovereign and private-sector lending, project and structured finance, treasury, economics, country strategy, climate and biodiversity, transport, energy, water, digital transformation, social inclusion, education, cities, evaluation, risk, legal affairs and procurement. Corporate functions include finance, audit, integrity, human resources, communications, technology and administration.

Pay, benefits and development

CAF’s working at CAF page describes annual performance evaluation, professional development and training. It also publishes examples of family-leave provisions. Those organization-wide descriptions are useful context, but they do not establish the salary or benefit eligibility of a particular contract.

Without a public grade scale, pay should be discussed only from the vacancy or written offer. Location, contract, responsibility, experience and internal policy matter. A consultancy fee should be compared with the consultant’s responsibility for tax, insurance, pension and equipment, not with a staff salary in isolation.

Applying carefully

Use CAF’s official current-opportunities system for staff and internships. Use the submission channel in a call or bid for consulting or procurement. Do not send an employment CV to a procurement mailbox unless the notice asks for it.

Before applying, record the contracting party, route, office, duration and language requirements. Then tailor evidence to the Bank’s regional work: the financing volume handled, policies designed, infrastructure delivered, risks managed or measurable development result. CAF’s mission is broad; a strong application is specific about what the candidate has already done at the level the vacancy requires.
