Working at IOM: contracts, grades and recruitment routes

IOM uses its own staff contract framework alongside internationally and locally recruited grades. Vacancy notices show the terms that apply to each role.

The International Organization for Migration is a related organization of the United Nations with its own Staff Regulations, contract policy and recruitment platform. UN common-system terminology is visible in many IOM vacancies, but an IOM offer should be read under IOM’s rules.

That point is useful when a vacancy carries a familiar grade such as P-3. The grade describes the level and recruitment category. It does not turn the appointment into a Secretariat contract.

Staff categories and grades

IOM recruits internationally for Professional and higher-category positions. Vacancy notices commonly use P grades for professional officers and D grades for senior directors. International Professional staff are expected to be mobile, and current notices normally state that nationals of the duty-station country are ineligible for that category.

National Officer and General Service posts are locally recruited. National Officer work is professional in nature and depends on knowledge of the country’s institutions, migration setting and partners. General Service roles cover administrative, operational and technical support. Local eligibility, including nationality, residence or authorization to work, is stated in the individual notice.

An ungraded label does not mean that a post has no requirements. IOM also advertises short-term professional and local roles as ungraded positions. The notice supplies the education, experience, fee or salary conditions that a numbered grade would otherwise help signal.

IOM contract labels

IOM’s publicly available policy on staff contracts lists Special Short Term, Special Fixed Term, Fixed Term and Regular contracts.

Special Short Term contracts are used for short periods and may run for up to nine months at a time under the policy. Special Fixed Term and Fixed Term contracts cover defined periods under their respective conditions. A Regular contract is indefinite, although continued employment remains subject to IOM’s rules, funding and organizational requirements.

Applicants should rely on the contract type and duration printed in the live vacancy. IOM’s work is heavily project-funded, and many notices make an appointment expressly subject to funding confirmation. A possibility of extension is not an approved extension.

Consultants are non-staff specialists engaged for a defined assignment. IOM also works with interns, seconded personnel, Junior Professional Officers and other temporary arrangements. None of those labels should be silently converted into a staff grade. The notice or programme agreement identifies the legal relationship.

The work behind the titles

IOM’s migration mandate produces several recurring job families. Programme and project officers manage migration projects, donor reporting and partner coordination. Protection roles cover migrant protection, counter-trafficking, return and reintegration, displacement and community-based work. Emergency and operations teams organize movement assistance, camp coordination, shelter and crisis response.

The organization also recruits specialists in migration health, data and research, the Displacement Tracking Matrix, border governance, labour mobility and social inclusion. Resource management, finance, procurement, human resources, legal affairs, communications, information technology and security support those programmes.

A generic title can conceal a narrow technical brief. Project Officer may refer to health, data systems or protection. Read the organizational context and responsibilities before deciding that prior project management experience is enough.

International and local recruitment

For an International Professional vacancy, check the nationality restriction and mobility statement. The duty station can be outside the country of nationality as a condition of eligibility. Language requirements often include English plus another UN language, with operational languages added for a particular location.

National Officer posts normally require nationality of the duty-station country. General Service notices may use nationality, legal residence or work authorization criteria depending on the office. These are screening conditions, so explain your status accurately in the application.

Applying through the official system

Current vacancies are published through the IOM e-Recruitment portal. Create a profile, select the vacancy and submit every required section before the closing time shown in the notice. IOM does not accept a general expression of interest as an application to a specific post unless the announcement expressly creates a roster.

Use the employment-history fields to show dates, workload and personal responsibility. For project-funded roles, name the budget, population, geography or delivery scale where disclosure is appropriate. A vacancy may use written tests, technical assessments and a competency-based interview.

IOM states in its notices that it charges no fee at any stage of recruitment and does not request bank-account information during an application. Messages asking for payment are not part of the official process.

Before accepting, confirm the staff or non-staff status, exact contract label, grade, end date, duty station and funding condition. Those details determine the offer; the IOM name alone does not.
