UN telecommunications technology careers: networks, field systems and support

A practical guide to UN telecommunications technology roles, from field networks and radio systems to headquarters support.

Telecommunications technology staff keep UN voice, data, conferencing and field communications working. Depending on the office, the job can involve enterprise networks at Headquarters, radio and satellite links in a field mission, user support, data centres, conferencing systems or infrastructure for emergency operations.

The official job family is broader than the title “Telecommunications Officer.” Recent UN Careers notices have placed both a field Telecommunications Officer at FS-6 and a New York Senior Telecommunications Assistant at G-7 in Telecommunications Technology. The first led telecommunications and infrastructure work in a field operation; the second supported enterprise users at Headquarters. The job-family label alone cannot tell you the technical stack.

Titles and categories

Titles include Telecommunications Officer, Information Systems Officer, ICT Officer, Field Technology Officer, Network Engineer, Telecommunications Assistant, Radio Technician and User Support Assistant. Broadcast and conferencing posts may also fall in this family.

International Professional positions are commonly advertised at P levels. Field Service categories are frequent in peace operations because experienced technical staff are needed at mission duty stations. General Service posts are locally recruited and often cover technical or supervisory support. National Professional Officer roles, consultancies and individual contractor opportunities may appear as well.

Use the Category and Level field, not an assumed hierarchy based on titles. An FS-6 officer, P-3 officer and G-7 assistant sit in different categories with different recruitment conditions. “Engineer” in the title does not automatically establish a Professional-category appointment.

Locations and operating conditions

Jobs are found in the Office of Information and Communications Technology in New York, UN offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi, regional commissions, service centres and peace operations. Mission roles may sit in a Field Technology Section and support several sites. They can involve travel to remote locations, work outside standard hours and response to outages under security restrictions.

Headquarters roles may focus on enterprise service management, conferencing, voice services, network operations or onsite support. A vacancy at the International Court of Justice, UNRWA or another UN organization can follow that entity’s own staff rules and technical environment. Identify the Department/Office before assuming Secretariat conditions.

Technology changes quickly, but recruitment notices remain specific. Read named platforms, protocols, certifications and years of experience as written. Do not assume that general cloud or software-development experience meets a radio, satellite or network-engineering requirement.

Qualifications and technical fit

Relevant degrees include telecommunications engineering, electrical or electronic engineering, computer science, information systems or a related field. Some technical assistant roles accept secondary education with suitable experience. Professional certifications in networking, radio, satellite, IT service management or security may be required or desirable in a particular notice, but there is no single UN telecommunications certificate.

Experience should match the service. Network roles may call for routing, switching, wireless systems, monitoring and redundancy. Field communications can involve VHF or UHF radio, microwave, satellite systems, towers, power and links to safety and security operations. Support jobs may emphasize incident management, endpoint services, conferencing and supervision of technicians or vendors.

Cybersecurity is part of responsible operations, but a telecommunications post is not automatically a cybersecurity job. Show security controls that belong to the system you managed, such as access control, segmentation, patching, configuration baselines or protected radio procedures.

Evidence that technical reviewers can trust

Name the environment, scale and service requirement. Useful measures include number of sites or users, uptime target, link capacity, incident volume, recovery time and equipment under support. Then describe what you personally designed, configured, supervised or restored.

A field example might explain how you surveyed a remote site, designed a resilient link with backup power, coordinated frequencies and installation, tested failover and handed over operating procedures. A support example could cover a recurring incident, root-cause analysis, a configuration change and the measured fall in repeat tickets.

Avoid lists of product names without context. A recruiter needs to know whether you merely used a dashboard or administered the service. Be honest about team responsibility and vendors. If an engineer approved the design and you led deployment, state that division.

Technical evidence should also show client judgement. UN communications can support meetings, medical response, security and protection activities. Explain how you prioritized an outage, communicated risk and maintained service continuity without claiming responsibility for the mission outcome itself.

Search UN Careers using both the job family and specific titles. Confirm the category, duty station, education rule and required technology in the live notice. A focused application that proves reliable service in a comparable environment is stronger than a broad claim to know “all ICT.”
