The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is seeking a Research Intern to support its research activities focused on emerging technology risks, cybercrime, scam centers, and the terrorist and criminal misuse of satellite-enabled technologies. The intern will conduct desk research on cybercrime trends, online fraud schemes, and emerging criminal methodologies, as well as examine the misuse of digital and satellite communications by terrorists and organized criminal networks. Tasks include supporting the drafting of background papers, briefing notes, concept notes, presentations, and analytical reports, collecting and organizing open-source information, academic literature, and policy materials, and assisting with research dissemination and outreach activities. The internship is located in Turin and expected to last 2 months.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are: a) to advance understanding of crime-related problems; b) to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; c) to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; d) to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. This internship is located within UNICRI’s research activities related to cybercrime, scam centres, emerging technology risks, terrorist and criminal misuse of satellite-enabled technologies, and broader digital infrastructure security. The intern will support ongoing analytical and policy-oriented research examining the evolving links between cyber-enabled crime, organized criminal networks, terrorist use of digital and satellite communications, illicit financial flows, digital platforms and emerging technologies. The intern will contribute to the following tasks: Conduct desk research on cybercrime trends, scam centres, online fraud schemes and emerging criminal methodologies; Conduct research on the terrorist and criminal misuse of satellite-enabled technologies, including satellite communication devices, satellite internet services and related digital infrastructure; Support the drafting of background papers, briefing notes, concept notes, presentations and analytical reports; Assist in collecting and organizing open-source information, academic literature and policy materials; Provide general research and programme support to identify new areas of interest for UNICRI to expand its work on cyber security, crime prevention, criminal justice and responsible technology governance; Support communication and outreach activities related to research dissemination where relevant; Assist with other research and programme support tasks as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. experience. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.
