Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is an intergovernmental treaty, under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. The CMS Office – Abu Dhabi coordinates the implementation of two CMS instruments: • The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats throughout their Range (Dugong MOU); and • The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MOU). Please note that these internship opportunities are UNPAID. The internship provides hands-on experience in international environmental cooperation, with a focus on data management, reporting, and digital tools.. The selected intern will support the CMS Office – Abu Dhabi by contributing to the management, organization, and analysis of programme data related to the Dugong and Raptors MOUs and related global initiatives. Under the supervision of the executive coordinator and/or the Programme Management Officers, the intern will assist in the following areas: A. Data and Information Management • Assist in compiling, organizing, and maintaining datasets related to CMS activities, species, and agreements • Support the structuring and management of internal information systems and repositories • Contribute to the improvement of data organization practices and workflows B. Data Analysis and Visualization • Assist in cleaning, validating, and preparing datasets for analysis • Support the development of basic data visualizations and reporting outputs (e.g., charts, dashboards) • Contribute to data-driven insights to support programme activities and decision-making. C. Knowledge Management Systems • Support the management and updating of internal knowledge platforms and document repositories • Ensure proper categorization, tagging, and accessibility of documents and datasets • Assist in improving information-sharing practices within the Secretariat D. Other Ad Hoc Tasks as requested by the Supervisor

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Minimum Bachelor´s level or equivalent), or c) Have graduated with a university degree. Candidates with the following areas of study will be given preference: data science, information management, information technology, computer science, business analytics, development studies, international relations, environmental policy, sustainable development, or a related field. Environmental backgrounds (e.g., biology, ecology, environmental science) are also welcome as a complementary asset, particularly for applicants interested in wildlife conservation. Applicants must: • Have a keen interest in working on data management, reporting, and information systems in an international context • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations • Have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter • Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views • Be proficient in standard computer software and digital tools for data handling and analysis Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
