Information Management Systems and Technology is a formal job family in the UN Secretariat’s Information and Telecommunication Technology network. It covers enterprise applications, infrastructure, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, systems architecture and IT service management.

The family is broad enough to include both software and infrastructure work. Candidates should search by specialty as well as by the generic title.

Formal titles and category boundaries

Professional vacancies use Associate Information Systems Officer, Information Systems Officer and Senior Information Systems Officer. A technical specialty may be added, including Solutions Architect, Cloud Engineer, Technical Engineer or Head of Service Desk.

Information Systems Assistant and Information Technology Assistant posts are normally in the General Service or Field Service categories. These jobs can involve skilled systems administration, development or user support, but their recruitment basis and grade structure differ from internationally recruited P posts.

Telecommunications Engineer, Information Management Officer and Data Engineer can sit in other formal job families. Information management often concerns records, content or operational information. Data engineering is now found in Data Analytics and Management. The vacancy’s Job Family line resolves the classification.

Responsibility at different grades

At P-2, an officer usually develops or operates a defined system under technical review. Duties may include coding, testing, configuration, incident analysis or preparation of technical documentation.

P-3 officers commonly own a service or major component. They may design solutions, lead implementations, manage suppliers, advise business users and supervise technical staff. Recent official P-3 titles include Solutions Architect, Cloud Engineer and Head of Service Desk.

A P-4 post often leads a team, platform or architecture domain. The officer may approve designs, manage service risk and coordinate delivery across several duty stations. P-5 officers can head an ICT service or a large organization-wide programme. Director posts set broader technology strategy and resource priorities.

A specialist can hold a higher grade without a large team when the system is complex or carries substantial operational and security risk.

Education, experience and certification

Computer science, information systems, software engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics or another technical discipline commonly appears in degree lists. The accepted field depends on the work. A network-infrastructure post may not accept the same degrees as an enterprise-applications post.

Secretariat Professional vacancies normally require an advanced university degree. A first-level degree with additional qualifying experience is often accepted when the notice says so. The alternative should not be assumed.

Experience requirements can be highly specific. Cloud engineering, ERP development, identity management, cybersecurity, database administration and service-desk management are related areas, but they are not interchangeable. The grade supplies a general level while the vacancy defines the technology and responsibility it will count.

Vendor and professional certifications may be required or desirable. A cloud, security or service-management certificate supports the experience described in the application; it does not replace a required degree or years of relevant work unless the vacancy explicitly permits that substitution.

English or French is normally required. Regional support jobs may require the other working language or another official language. An IT officer supporting several countries may need to provide advice and documentation in more than one language.

Typical employers and locations

The Office of Information and Communications Technology operates enterprise services and supports digital transformation across the Secretariat. Information Systems Officers also work in UN offices, regional commissions, tribunals, field missions and substantive departments with their own systems.

Recent official vacancies have appeared in New York, Geneva, Nairobi, Bangkok, Panama City, Addis Ababa and Moroni. A headquarters post may focus on enterprise platforms and governance. A regional post may combine technical leadership with direct operational support to several offices.

Some openings are temporary, position-specific or limited to internal candidates. The recruitment type and contract duration are separate from the P grade.

Application evidence

Name the system, users, scale and production setting. State whether you designed, built, migrated, secured or operated it. ‘Worked on cloud transformation’ gives no evidence of personal technical responsibility.

For software, describe architecture, languages, deployment and testing. For infrastructure, identify the service, availability requirement and operational controls. For service management, give incident volume, service levels and the changes you introduced.

Security claims need precision. State whether you performed risk assessment, identity controls, vulnerability remediation or incident response. Avoid exposing configurations or protected incidents.

Supplier management should identify whether you defined requirements, reviewed designs, accepted delivery or managed service performance. A vendor’s implementation is not automatically your engineering achievement.

Keep individual and team work separate. If you designed one component of an enterprise platform, say so. Useful results include availability, recovery time, incident reduction, adoption or delivery time, with a clear baseline.
