The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is seeking an unpaid, full-time Economic Affairs Intern for a duration of 4 to 6 months, based in Bangkok. The intern will work within the Section on Sustainable Development and Countries in Special Situations, supporting the Commission's mission to foster cooperation among member states for sustainable development. Key responsibilities include conducting background research, performing literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, and drafting inputs for policy reports such as the Asia-Pacific Countries with Special Needs Development Report. The role also involves coordinating logistical and organizational aspects of high-level intergovernmental meetings, workshops, and capacity-building events. The ideal candidate is a current student in a graduate program or final year of a bachelor's degree, or a recent graduate within one year of completion, with a field of study closely related to the internship. The position offers an opportunity to develop analytical and coordination skills while contributing to ESCAP's analytical products and operational tasks. Fluency in English is mandatory, with knowledge of other UN languages considered an asset. This is an unpaid position where the intern bears all costs related to travel, visas, and living expenses.

Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is for a minimum of 4 months up to a maximum of 6 months.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned.
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The Commission promotes cooperation among its 52 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations.
This position is located in the Section on Sustainable Development and Countries in Special Situations (SDCSS) of the Office of the Executive Secretary. The Section coordinates the work of ESCAP divisions to support least developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS) in their pursuit of sustainable development.
The intern will gain first-hand experience contributing to background research for ESCAP publications and coordinating high-level intergovernmental meetings. Working within a dynamic team, the intern will develop both analytical and coordination skills through duties that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Contribute to background research, including literature reviews, data collection and analysis and drafting inputs for the Asia-Pacific Countries with Special Needs Development Report, 2027 and other policy reports. - Conduct research for other analytical products to support the delivery of workshops and other capacity development events. - Contribute to the logistical and organizational coordination of intergovernmental meetings and events organized by the Section, including the Expert Group Meeting on the Asia-Pacific Countries with Special Needs Development Report, a trade related capacity building workshop in Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development.
- Collaborate with the team on day-to-day activities and operational tasks and perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Programme. Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have you completed a degree and are able to commence an internship within a year of graduation? Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for? Describe your experience in undertaking research and data analysis with concrete examples.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
