Working at UNAIDS: contracts, grades and career paths

A guide to UNAIDS staff categories, fixed-term and temporary appointments, non-staff opportunities and the WHO rules behind its employment system.

48

UNAIDS is a joint United Nations programme, but its Secretariat has its own workforce. A staff member recruited by the UNAIDS Secretariat is not employed by whichever cosponsor happens to work on the same project. UNAIDS staff conditions are administered under the WHO Staff Regulations and Staff Rules together with UNAIDS policies.

That administrative basis makes UNAIDS different from a UN Secretariat office. Applicants should use the contract categories published by UNAIDS rather than importing Secretariat definitions.

Staff categories

UNAIDS advertises Professional and higher-category jobs, National Professional Officer posts and General Service roles. Professional posts are internationally recruited and use P grades, with Director grades for senior leadership. National Professional Officer posts are locally recruited from nationals of the country of service and are graded in the NPO or NO sequence shown in the notice. General Service roles use local grades, commonly G-1 to G-7, and require the right to work in the duty-station country.

Professional salaries follow the international common system. National Professional Officer and General Service salary scales are set locally. Grade describes the level of the post, not the length of the appointment.

UNAIDS’s employment information states that vacancies are offered on fixed-term or temporary appointments under its staff rules. A fixed-term appointment is issued for a specified period and can be extended if the organisation’s needs, funding and performance support it. An extension is not an entitlement.

Temporary appointments are also time-limited, but applicants should not apply the UN Secretariat’s “normally less than one year” definition to UNAIDS. UNAIDS uses the WHO framework, and temporary vacancies can be advertised for longer periods. The duration printed in the job notice is the one that matters.

The underlying UNAIDS Staff Regulations and Staff Rules also contain provisions on continuing appointments. Current external recruitment, however, is presented as fixed-term or temporary. A candidate should not expect a continuing appointment unless an official offer expressly provides one.

Non-staff ways to contribute

UNAIDS can engage consultants for defined advisory or technical assignments. Consultants are not staff and do not gain a P or NPO grade through the contract. The notice or terms of reference should explain the services, duration, fee, location and travel.

Internships provide practical learning and are not entry-level staff jobs. UN Volunteer assignments are governed by UNV conditions. Secondments, loans from partner organisations and other affiliated personnel keep the status described by the relevant agreement. Because UNAIDS works with multiple cosponsors, it is especially important to identify the legal employer or contracting entity.

A vacancy hosted by WHO or another organisation should be read under that organisation’s stated terms. Programme collaboration does not make contracts interchangeable.

Career fields

UNAIDS recruits people who work on HIV prevention, testing, treatment, care and health policy. Strategic information roles cover epidemiology, surveillance, programme data, modelling and the use of evidence. Country and regional advisers support governments, communities and UN country teams.

Human rights, gender equality, community leadership and the removal of legal and social barriers are central fields, not side topics. Other roles cover financing, resource mobilisation, partnerships, communications and advocacy. Finance, human resources, procurement, administration, information technology and management positions support the Secretariat itself.

Many professional posts combine technical knowledge with political judgement and partnership work. A strong clinical or epidemiological background may not be enough for a role that requires policy negotiation and community engagement. Conversely, advocacy experience may need to be backed by the specific analytical or programme skills named in the notice.

Applying

UNAIDS vacancies are published through its official e-recruitment system. Read the eligibility questions, mobility provisions, required languages and appointment duration before preparing the application. International Professional posts can carry mobility expectations, while local categories have nationality or work-authorisation requirements.

Record the job number, category, grade, appointment type, duration, duty station and employing entity. For consultancy or affiliated roles, note the actual contract issuer and benefits framework. UNAIDS does not charge an application or recruitment fee.

The reliable comparison is therefore not “UNAIDS versus WHO grade.” It is the exact UNAIDS or host-agency vacancy against the rules named in that vacancy. The joint programme structure explains how the work is organised; the appointment document explains who employs you.
