The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is seeking candidates for its Regular Volunteer Programme at its headquarters in Rome, Italy. This is a non-staff, unpaid volunteer opportunity with a duration of up to six months. Volunteers will be assigned to a field relevant to FAO's mission, performing functions specified in Terms of Reference prepared by the hiring office. The role supports FAO's strategic framework to transform agri-food systems, aiming to end hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity while contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The ideal candidate is a national of an FAO Member State, aged 18 or older, who has completed secondary school education. They must possess working knowledge of at least one FAO official language and demonstrate the ability to adapt to an international multicultural environment. The position requires relevant working or research experience in one of FAO's fields, along with core competencies such as results focus, teamwork, communication, and integrity. Selected volunteers undergo rigorous background checks and must have appropriate residence or immigration status in Italy. The programme encourages applications from qualified females, nationals of non- and under-represented Members, and candidates from specific developing country categories.

The Programme proactively and strategically mobilizes broad-based volunteer services of citizens of Members to contribute to end hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity. 

Reporting Lines

The volunteer will report to an assigned supervisor.

Technical Focus 

The volunteer will be assigned to a field relevant to the mission and work of FAO. 

Tasks and responsibilities

The volunteer will perform the functions specified in the Terms of Reference (TOR) prepared by the hiring office.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have completed secondary school education. 
  • Working knowledge of at least one FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish). Knowledge of a second FAO language will be considered an asset. 
  • Be nationals of FAO Members
  • Candidates should be aged 18 or older.
  • Candidates should be able to adapt to an international multicultural environment and have good communication skills.

  • FAO does not provide any remuneration to volunteers
