The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Programme Management Intern for its Science and Technical Assistance (STA) branch, based in Geneva, Switzerland, for a six-month duration. The STA branch supports the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions by providing scientific and technical input for their conferences of the parties and delivering technical assistance. The intern will assist in implementing cross-cutting activities across these conventions under the supervision of programme officers. Key responsibilities include conducting research and analysis on technical and policy issues related to the sound management of chemicals and waste; preparing technical documents, briefing notes, presentations, and communication materials; supporting the planning and organization of meetings, workshops, webinars, and capacity-building activities; assisting with project implementation, monitoring, and reporting; and contributing to knowledge management and information-sharing initiatives. The role also involves providing general support to the Branch's collaboration with Parties, regional centers, partner organizations, and other stakeholders. This internship offers an opportunity to gain knowledge on the scope of scientific and technical content of the BRS conventions. The successful candidate will work within an international and multidisciplinary team, contributing to a broad range of activities related to technical assistance, capacity-building, and intergovernmental processes. The position is unpaid, with costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses borne by the intern or their sponsoring institution. Fluency in spoken and written English is required, with knowledge of an additional official UN language considered an advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The Science and Technical Assistance (STA) branch of the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions provides scientific and technical input related to the programme of work and activities under the three conventions. Itis also responsible for managing the scientific work required by the conferences of the parties and provides technical assistance (e.g. through projects, trainings) on topics related to the implementation of the conventions.
The selected intern will assist the STA branch in the implementation of cross-cutting activities across the three Conventions. Working within an international and multidisciplinary team, the intern will contribute to a broad range of activities related to technical assistance, capacity-building, knowledge management, project implementation, stakeholder engagement, and intergovernmental processes. The internship provides an opportunity to gain knowledge on the scope of scientific and technical content of the BRS conventions including other programmes coordinated and implemented by the Secretariat.
The successful applicant, under the direct supervision of relevant programme officers, will support the STA Branch in the delivery of the following tasks related to the implementation of the Conventions, among others, as required:
- research and analysis on technical and policy issues related to the sound management of chemicals and waste; - contribute to the preparation of technical documents, briefing notes, presentations and communication materials; - support the planning and organization of meetings, workshops, webinars and other capacity-building activities; - assist with project implementation, monitoring and reporting; - contribute to knowledge management and information-sharing initiatives; and provide general support to the Branch's collaboration with Parties, regional centres, partner organizations and other stakeholders.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) related to business management, public administration, international law, including international environmental law, environmental management including chemicals and waste ; (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
