The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is recruiting a Driver to support the Programme for Accelerated Community Development (PACD) in The Gambia. This role focuses on providing reliable, safe, and discreet driving services to operations and programme staff, consultants, and UN personnel on mission. The incumbent is responsible for the proper use and day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle, including minor repairs and routine checks of tires, battery, and fluids. Key duties include transporting authorized personnel, managing the delivery and collection of mail and documents, and assisting with visa and customs formalities for visitors at the airport. The driver must maintain accurate daily logs, ensure all necessary vehicle documents and supplies (such as first aid kits and spare parts) are available, and report any road safety incidents promptly. The position requires a client-oriented approach, demonstrating courtesy, tact, and the ability to work effectively with people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds. Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the driver must adhere to high standards of integrity, discretion, and security protocols. The role demands a safe driving record, knowledge of local driving regulations, and proficiency in English, with local language skills considered an asset. The successful candidate will contribute to the broader mission of addressing poverty and inequality by ensuring efficient logistical support for community development initiatives.

2. Office/Unit/Project Description 

The Programme for Accelerated Community Development (PACD) model provides a vehicle for a multisectoral approach to addressing poverty and inequality at community level and will help government to respond to social demands through a partnership with development partners to ensure accelerated, multi-pronged, participatory, and accountable delivery of services particularly to far-to-reach populations. 

This will revitalize and transform the economy for the wellbeing of all Gambians and particularly address the persistent and serious disparities between urban and rural areas in terms of access to basic services including water, energy and road infrastructure as well as addressing existing inequalities, and disparities and injustices in access to socio-economic infrastructure. 

The model aligns with international development norms of aiming to keep people out of poverty through a multi-dimensional approach. It will help unleash further opportunities to strengthen national capacities, promote south-south cooperation and more importantly, improve the conditions of the people, particularly women and girls in poor communities. Furthermore, it will be a critical response to inclusive development for greater equity and social justice in line with the aims and aspirations of the National Development Plan and SDGs. 

Under the guidance and supervision of the Operations Manager, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. 

The Driver provides driving services to the operations and programme staff in the CO, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.

3. Scope of Work

Summary of key functions:

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services
  • Proper use of vehicle 
  • Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle
  • Availability of documents/ supplies
  1. Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services by:
  • Driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items.
  •  Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport including visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.
  • Attending and completing all road safety training relevant to their level and role.
  • Reporting all road safety related incidents in a timely manner.

2. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through:

  • Accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, 
  • Provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

3. Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through :

  • Timely minor repairs, 
  • Arrangements for major repairs, 
  • Timely changes of oil, 
  • Daily check of tires, battery, water levels, brakes, car washing, etc.

4. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including: 

  • Vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle.
  • Ensuring that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents

6. Minimum Qualifications 

  • Completion of Secondary Education

Minimum years of relevant work experience 

  • 3 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance

Required Language(s) 

  • Proficiency in oral and written English
  • Knowledge of any of the local languages in The Gambia such as Mandinka, Wolof, Fula will be an asset.

7. The following documents shall be required from the applicants:
