Statistics jobs at the United Nations

UN Statisticians develop official statistics, methods and standards and support national statistical systems.

Statistics is a formal job family in the UN Secretariat’s Economic, Social and Development network. UN Statisticians produce and improve official statistics, develop methods and classifications, support international reporting and help national statistical systems strengthen their work.

The family is defined by its responsibility for trustworthy official statistics. It is not a general label for every job that uses data.

Formal titles and professional boundaries

Vacancies use Associate Statistician, Statistician and Senior Statistician. Chief of Section and Chief Statistician may appear at higher levels. Statistical Assistant posts are normally locally recruited General Service jobs.

Data Analysts and Data Engineers may belong to Data Analytics and Management. Economists use statistics but are classified in Economic Affairs when economic analysis is the core work. Demographers can appear in Population Affairs or Social Affairs. The vacancy’s Job Family line gives the formal classification.

Official statistics also carry institutional duties that a commercial analytics role may not: methodological transparency, comparability, confidentiality, classifications and work with national statistical authorities.

Responsibility at different grades

At P-2, a statistician normally compiles and validates data, applies established methods, prepares tables and supports publications or meetings. Work is reviewed by a senior statistician.

P-3 statisticians may lead a statistical domain or technical project. They can design surveys, develop indicators, analyse methodological problems, prepare publications and advise national counterparts. Official P-3 examples include social and demographic statistics at UNECE and gender statistics at ECLAC.

A P-4 post often coordinates an international statistical programme, leads methodological development or supervises a team. P-5 officers may head a section, set priorities and represent the organization in senior international statistical forums. Director roles manage larger divisions and programmes.

A senior methodological post can carry considerable responsibility without managing many people because its standards may be used across countries.

Education, experience and technical requirements

Statistics is the most direct degree field. Mathematics, economics, demography, data science or another quantitative discipline may be accepted when the vacancy says so. Some posts seek subject knowledge in national accounts, trade, population, gender, environment or another statistical domain.

Secretariat Professional vacancies normally require an advanced university degree. A first-level degree with additional qualifying experience may be accepted under the terms of the notice. The alternative should not be assumed.

Survey design, sampling, estimation, administrative-data use, statistical standards and general data analysis should not be treated as identical experience. A vacancy may require one domain and list another as merely desirable.

Software requirements vary. A notice may ask for R, Python, SAS, Stata or another package, but professional statistics involves more than tool use. Method, quality, confidentiality and interpretation matter.

English or French is normally required. Regional commission posts may require another official language for work with member States. Statistical publications and intergovernmental meetings can demand strong drafting skills.

Employers and duty stations

The United Nations Statistics Division is based in New York. Each regional commission has statistical work: UNECE in Geneva, ECLAC in Santiago, ESCAP in Bangkok, ECA in Addis Ababa and ESCWA in Beirut.

Statisticians also serve in substantive offices that maintain specialized datasets. Their work may include international data collection, methodological groups, capacity development and support for global indicators.

A headquarters post may develop global standards or compile worldwide data. A regional post may work more directly with national statistical offices and regional comparability. Grade and contract duration do not identify which setting applies.

Evidence to write in the application

Name the statistical domain, population and method. ‘Analysed survey data’ is incomplete. State whether you designed the sample, produced weights, treated non-response, estimated indicators or reviewed quality.

For administrative data, explain the source, linkage or transformation and fitness checks. For standards, identify the classification or methodological guidance and your role in developing or implementing it.

Capacity-development experience should specify the national institution, statistical problem and assistance delivered. Running software training is different from helping an office redesign a production process.

Publication evidence should identify authorship accurately. State which analysis or chapters you produced. For indicators, explain definitions, disaggregation and validation. Avoid presenting a dashboard as proof of statistical methodology when the underlying estimates were created by others.

For international comparability, describe how you handled definitions, metadata or country submissions. If data were revised, explain your role in quality review without disclosing protected information.

Keep causal and descriptive claims separate. A correlation table does not establish programme impact. Clear methodological language gives the reviewer a better basis for assessing professional depth.
