Working at WFP: staff grades and short-term contract types

WFP publishes a detailed contract framework covering international and national staff, consultants, service contracts and several short-term field arrangements.

The World Food Programme uses several contract types because its workforce covers headquarters functions, long-running country operations and rapidly changing emergencies. Two people working on the same response can have different status, grade systems and renewal limits.

WFP’s official contract guide provides unusually specific public definitions. Applicants should still use the live vacancy for the exact term offered.

Fixed-term staff

International Professional staff are recruited internationally in grades P-1 through P-5 and D-1 through D-2. They work in specialist, managerial and leadership functions. Most WFP International Professional roles are rotational, with geographical mobility under the reassignment policy.

WFP states that International Professional staff generally cannot apply for positions in their home country, apart from posts at headquarters and regional offices. The vacancy may add other eligibility conditions.

Limited Fixed Term International Professional is a separate staff appointment for medium-term functions lasting between one and four years. WFP uses it for time-bound projects or positions requiring skills that are not readily available in its internal rotational workforce. LFT should be read as its own appointment type, not as an informal description of every fixed-term P post.

National Professional Officers are nationals of the country where they serve. WFP uses NO-A through NO-D for professional work requiring national institutional and cultural knowledge. General Service staff are locally recruited at G-1 through G-7 for administrative, clerical, technical and specialized support. GS posts do not carry organizational relocation benefits.

Consultants and local service arrangements

An International Consultant, shown as CST in WFP vacancies, is a non-staff specialist hired for defined results or short-term professional coverage. Contracts run for up to 11 months, followed by a required one-month break before re-engagement. WFP also publishes cumulative service limits. Fees may be daily, monthly or deliverable-based.

A Service Contract is used in country offices and regional bureaux for functions needed over a specific programme period. An individual contract runs for at least six months and no more than 12 months at a time, with renewal possible within the published maximum period for the same function. Rates are set locally.

Special Service Agreements are field arrangements for temporary General Service or Professional-level functions. They last less than 11 months and use local salary rates. SSA is not a staff appointment even when the duties resemble a Professional post.

WFP also uses Casual Labour for short, intermittent, seasonal or manual work in field locations. General Service Short-Term Appointments, known as TAU, provide temporary GS support at headquarters and global offices. TAU appointments last no more than 11 months and have published break-in-service and cumulative limits.

The contract guide should be read before comparing pay. Salary, fee and locally set remuneration describe different arrangements.

The main job families

WFP recruits heavily in programme and policy, emergency response, vulnerability analysis and mapping, monitoring and evaluation, nutrition, food security and cash-based assistance. Supply-chain work includes procurement, logistics, aviation, shipping, engineering and warehouse operations.

Other posts cover partnerships, donor relations, communications, security, finance, human resources, legal affairs, technology and data. Country directors and senior programme leaders sit in the international staff structure, while a large share of delivery depends on national staff and local contract holders.

A Logistics Officer vacancy can be internationally recruited, national professional or locally contracted. The title must be read with the contract and grade fields.

Applying and checking eligibility

Current vacancies are available through WFP Careers. Follow the official vacancy link to create a profile and apply. WFP’s young-talent opportunities, including internships and the donor-funded JPO programme, are published through their own sections.

For an International Professional vacancy, check nationality and mobility conditions. For NO roles, nationality of the duty-station country is required. GS, Service Contract, SSA and casual arrangements rely on local eligibility rules, including residence and work authorization where stated.

Match evidence to the operational scale of the post. A supply-chain application should identify commodities, routes, budgets, systems or emergency constraints. A programme application should show the applicant’s role in assessment, design, implementation and reporting.

Check the initial duration and the cumulative limit separately. A vacancy with a possibility of extension can still reach a mandatory break or maximum service period. Renewal also depends on funding, organizational need and satisfactory performance.

WFP does not charge recruitment fees. Use the official portal, and treat payment requests or informal offers without a corresponding vacancy as fraudulent.
