UN Technology Bank careers: contracts and grades in Gebze

How UN Secretariat staff posts and consultant assignments at the Technology Bank for LDCs are recruited and graded.

The United Nations Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries supports science, technology and innovation capacity in LDCs. It is a UN entity established by the General Assembly and based in Gebze, Türkiye. Its staff openings use the United Nations Secretariat recruitment and employment framework.

The Technology Bank is small. Vacancies may be infrequent, and much of its delivery also involves consultants and partner organizations. Applicants need to distinguish direct UN staff employment from project work carrying the Technology Bank’s name.

Staff appointments

Staff vacancies are published in United Nations Careers with the department or office “Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries.” They use Professional and higher, director, and General Service categories where applicable.

Professional grades run from P-1 through P-5, followed by D-1 and D-2. A recent Managing Director opening was D-2. Professional posts are internationally recruited. General Service jobs are locally recruited in Türkiye and use the local salary scale. The vacancy determines whether an applicant needs existing work authorization or can receive the arrangements available to internationally recruited staff.

Appointment types follow UN Staff Regulations and Rules. A temporary job opening is for a short-term need and carries no expectation of conversion. A fixed-term appointment ends on the stated date unless renewed. A continuing appointment is available only under the relevant rules and should not be inferred from an established-sounding job title.

Professional salary combines the common base scale and the post adjustment for the duty station. General Service pay is based on local conditions. Starting step and benefits depend on the appointment, experience and personal status.

Consultants and partner personnel

The Technology Bank also recruits consultants through UN Careers. A consultant opening is marked “Consultants, CON” rather than P or G. It specifies deliverables, duration, location or remote arrangements and fee conditions. Consultants are not staff members and do not receive a UN staff grade simply because the work is supervised by a UN official.

Some programmes are implemented with UNDP, ICGEB, universities, governments or other partners. A role advertised by a partner remains employment or a fellowship with that partner unless the notice names the UN as contracting party. The Technology Bank’s logo or funding is not enough to establish the employer.

Internships, when offered, follow the terms in the specific UN opening. They are not an entry P grade and do not promise later staff appointment.

Work in Gebze and beyond

The Technology Bank website gives its address at the TÜBİTAK Gebze campus. Staff can travel extensively or work with LDC governments and institutions remotely, but the duty station for a staff post remains the location printed in the vacancy.

Substantive work includes technology-needs assessments, science and innovation policy, digital transformation, research partnerships, technology transfer, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, productive capacity and support for national academies and universities.

The Bank also needs programme management, monitoring and evaluation, partnerships, resource mobilization, communications, finance, budget, procurement, human resources, administration and information technology. A technical degree may be useful, but many roles require policy, programme or institutional experience rather than laboratory research.

The Technology Bank works under the broader UN architecture for LDCs. A senior vacancy may report to the Under-Secretary-General heading UN-OHRLLS, as the official vacancy page has shown. That reporting line does not make every UN-OHRLLS vacancy a Technology Bank job; check the department field.

Applying

Use the Work With Us link on the Bank’s site or search UN Careers by department. Submit the application in Inspira before the deadline. Creating a profile or saving a draft does not complete submission.

Staff selection can include screening questions, written assessments, competency-based interviews and references. Consultant recruitment focuses on the required outputs, methodology, fee and availability. A staff CV should show continuing responsibility and results; a consultancy proposal should show how the specific deliverables will be produced.

The most reliable sequence is employer, staff or consultant status, grade, appointment type and duty station. It prevents a project consultant from being described as a P-level employee and keeps partner opportunities separate from UN Secretariat appointments.
