UN Global Compact Office and UN Partnerships careers: a guide to the real employer
How to distinguish UN Secretariat posts from Foundation, Local Network and partner roles around the Global Compact and UN Office for Partnerships.
The UN Global Compact Office and the United Nations Office for Partnerships both work with business, foundations and other non-state actors. Their names also appear beside foundations, Local Networks and implementing partners. A candidate must identify the legal employer before interpreting a title, grade or benefits.
Direct staff vacancies in either UN office use United Nations Secretariat Staff Regulations and Rules. Roles at the Foundation for the Global Compact, a country Local Network or an external partner do not become UN appointments because they support the same initiative.
United Nations Global Compact Office
The Global Compact Office manages and coordinates the UN Global Compact initiative. Its mandate covers human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption principles, participant engagement, integrity, programmes and UN-business cooperation.
UN staff openings appear in UN Careers under “Global Compact Office.” A recent Programme Management Officer vacancy, for example, was advertised at P-3 in New York. Staff grades follow the UN ladder: P-1 through P-5 for internationally recruited Professional posts, D-1 and D-2 for directors, and local General Service grades where used. The appointment type, whether temporary, fixed-term or otherwise, is stated in the notice.
The Global Compact’s opportunities page can also display jobs supported by the Foundation for the Global Compact and related operational structures. These may use titles such as manager, associate or specialist without a UN grade. The Foundation is not the UN Secretariat. Its employment terms, salary and benefits follow its own offer.
Local Networks are independent, locally incorporated organizations that advance the initiative in particular countries. A Local Network vacancy is employment with that network, not transfer into the UN Secretariat. Board service is another separate category: Global Compact Board members serve in an honorary, unpaid capacity and are appointed, not hired through the staff portal.
United Nations Office for Partnerships
The United Nations Office for Partnerships, often branded UN Partnerships, is a UN Secretariat office in New York. It acts as a gateway for partnerships and supports the UN Fund for International Partnerships, the UN Democracy Fund and initiatives of the Secretary-General.
Its staff vacancies appear in UN Careers under “United Nations Office for Partnerships.” A recent Chief of Operations opening was P-5. Internships also appear in the same system and are labelled Internship, I-1 rather than staff grades. UN Secretariat internships are not probationary employment and offer no automatic route to a P post.
UN Partnerships can work through grants, implementing partners and consultants. Someone hired by a recipient organization remains that organization’s employee. Always read the department or office and contracting entity.
Contracts, pay and location
UN staff appointments in both offices use the same broad contract rules as the Secretariat. Temporary appointments address short needs and do not carry an expectation of renewal. Fixed-term appointments end on their stated date unless renewed. Consultants and individual contractors are non-staff and are paid under their contract.
Professional salary combines the common base scale with New York post adjustment. General Service salary follows the New York local scale. A vacancy’s grade does not guarantee entry at the top step, and a Foundation salary cannot be inferred from the UN scale.
Most direct positions are in New York, although Global Compact activity is worldwide and Local Networks operate in many countries. A locally advertised network job follows local work-permission rules. A New York General Service role can require local recruitment eligibility, while Professional recruitment is international.
Work and applications
Job families include programme management, corporate sustainability, human rights, labour standards, climate and environment, anti-corruption, integrity, stakeholder engagement, private-sector partnerships, fundraising, governance, communications, data, events, finance and operations.
For UN staff and internships, apply through UN Careers. For Foundation or Local Network jobs, follow the application link and terms on that employer’s page. Do not submit a UN Personal History Profile where a Foundation asks for a résumé, or assume a Foundation title maps to P-3.
A quick check prevents most confusion: look for the employer named in the footer, vacancy system and offer. “UN Global Compact” may describe the initiative; it does not by itself answer who will sign the contract.
