IDB Group contracts and job levels: a guide to IDB, IDB Invest and IDB Lab

How staff, consultant and internship appointments work across the IDB Group, with the nationality and grade limits applicants need to know.

“IDB Group” can refer to three employers: the Inter-American Development Bank, IDB Invest and IDB Lab. They share a regional mission and careers platform, but the vacancy identifies which institution is hiring. That distinction affects the work, nationality rules and employment terms.

The public-sector Bank lends to governments. IDB Invest handles private-sector operations. IDB Lab focuses on innovation and early-stage approaches. A candidate should name the correct employer in the application rather than treating the three as one undifferentiated bank.

Staff, consultants and internships

The official IDB jobs site says staff positions are initially offered for up to three years. Renewal depends on business needs and performance; an initial term is not a promise of indefinite employment.

Consultants provide defined projects or services and can work under consultant contracts for a cumulative maximum of thirty-six months. The terms vary with the assignment and contract length. A Product External Consultant is engaged for a specific output, often off-site, and paid as set out in the deliverable-based contract. Neither arrangement is a staff appointment.

Paid internships are available at IDB, IDB Invest and IDB Lab. They are short, structured learning appointments, not junior staff contracts. Programme notices state the duration, location and student or recent-graduate requirements.

Secondments and other specialized arrangements may appear in particular calls. The wording of that call controls; it is safer not to force every temporary assignment into the consultant category.

What is public about grades

The IDB Group does not publish a complete candidate-facing table that maps all internal grades to job titles and salary bands. Vacancies may display a title, business unit and contract type without a grade. In that case, there is no official basis for assigning one.

An official IDB Invest procurement document has disclosed a technical track running from grade 1 to grade 9, with grade 1 the highest, and different duty-station categories. That limited disclosure is not a full careers framework. It does not show the title, pay band or requirements for every grade, and it should not be applied automatically to IDB or IDB Lab.

Titles such as Analyst, Associate, Officer, Lead or Principal can indicate scope, but their use varies by employer and function. Keep the title from the vacancy and judge fit from duties and required experience. Do not translate it into a UN grade or another development bank’s scale.

Nationality, location and fields of work

The IDB hiring FAQ states that candidates for employment at IDB must be citizens of one of its 48 member countries. It also states that IDB Invest positions do not have a citizenship restriction. Applicants to IDB Lab should follow the eligibility language in the specific posting.

Headquarters is in Washington, DC, and the Group recruits for country offices in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as offices in Europe and Asia. Full-time eligible employees posted to headquarters may receive support for G-4 visa processing, but the US authorities make the decision. Local roles can require existing work authorization or country knowledge.

Job families cover public-sector development, private investment, project preparation and supervision, portfolio management, economics, social policy, infrastructure, climate, environmental and social safeguards, evaluation, treasury, finance, risk, law, integrity, technology, communications and corporate services.

Hiring and compensation

Applications go through the official online system with a CV in English or Spanish. The published process describes initial screening, followed for selected candidates by a technical assessment and panel interview. A final decision and pre-employment checks follow. A cover letter is needed only when the vacancy asks for one.

The Group describes compensation as market-aligned and provides benefits according to employer, contract and eligibility. There is no complete public grade-by-grade salary table for applicants. Any salary range in a vacancy is more reliable than third-party estimates.

When assessing an offer, confirm the legal employer, staff or consultant status, term, duty station, base pay, benefits and visa or relocation provisions. These details cannot be derived from the IDB Group name alone.
