The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Mexico City is seeking an unpaid, in-person Intern - Graphic Designer for a maximum duration of six months. Reporting to the National Information Officer, the intern will support the UNIC's communications and advocacy functions across Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. Key responsibilities include assisting in the development of graphic design plans and creating multimedia products such as videos, animations, infographics, maps, and banners for digital platforms and social media. The role also involves designing printed materials, producing print-ready dummies, editing photos, and researching public outreach formats aligned with UN branding guidelines. The ideal candidate is a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor's) or a graduate school programme (master's/PhD), or has already completed such a degree. The position requires strong technical skills in Adobe Creative Suite and other multimedia production tools, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google programs. The intern must demonstrate cultural sensitivity and the ability to interact with diverse audiences. Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, while English is desirable. This is a non-remunerated internship where the candidate covers all personal costs.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Mexico City, within the Information Centres Service (ICS) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The UNIC is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) and UNIC Mexico City is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. It is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by communicating the work of the UN to a local audience in local languages; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the peoples it serves. In addition, UNICs lead the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and Resident Coordination Office (RCO) communications and advocacy functions.

The incumbent is under the direct supervision of UNIC's Director and/or the National Information Officer (NIO). He or she reports to the NIO of UNIC Mexico. The internship is UNPAID and in-person. The intern must cover full-time working hours, for up to a maximum of 6 months - 35 hours per week.

With limits of delegated authority, the intern will be responsible for one or more of the following duties:

  • Assist in the development of a graphic design plan with multimedia products that support UNIC communications activities, campaigns and events, aligned with UN branding guidelines;
  • Assist in the design of multimedia materials (postcards, videos, gifs, animations, infographics, reports, maps, banners, web developments, etc.) for various formats and digital platforms, including UN institutional and partner campaigns and for a variety of audiences;
  • Assist in the design of printed materials (brochures, banners, backs, reports and promotional items);
  • Assist in producing dummies for printing and reproduction of graphic materials;
  • Assist in photo editing;
  • Assist in researching, designing, and implementing appropriate formats of public outreach for a variety of target audiences;
  • Assist in the creation of visual products for the UN website and social media;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Applicants must also:

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications including Microsoft Office 365 and Google programs;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
  • Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams;
  • Applicants must have good knowledge of multimedia production programmes, such as Adobe suite Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Capcut, Canvas or related.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written Spanish is required. Fluency in English is desirable.
