AIIB contracts and job levels: an official-source guide

How AIIB staff, support roles, consultants and young-talent routes differ, and why applicants should not invent a grade ladder from job titles.

33

AIIB vacancies use titles such as Analyst, Associate, Officer, Senior Officer and Principal. They indicate increasing scope in ordinary usage, but the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank does not publish a complete candidate-facing grade ladder that maps every title to a numbered grade and salary range.

That absence should be stated plainly. A candidate can still read the vacancy accurately by separating employment category, recruitment scope, location and title.

Staff and other ways of working

AIIB’s Staff Regulations provide for appointments made through competitive selection. The appointment letter records the position, salary, term and any probation. A staff vacancy may be fixed-term or otherwise governed by the terms shown in the notice and offer. Applicants should not infer duration from the title.

The AIIB Staff Rules distinguish Professional Staff from Support Staff. Support Staff are used where global experience and international mobility are not essential and a suitable local candidate pool exists. Professional Staff roles can be recruited more broadly and may carry mobility expectations.

Individual consultants are engaged for specified services rather than appointed as staff. AIIB advertises consultant opportunities separately, and people of any nationality may apply. The scope, deliverables, duration and fee basis come from the consulting notice and contract.

Young-talent opportunities, including graduate and internship routes when open, have their own conditions. They should not be treated as informal versions of regular Analyst hiring.

Titles and grades

Current professional vacancies commonly use Analyst or Associate, Officer, Senior Officer and Principal in their titles. Some notices say that previous experience will determine the final grade and title. That sentence means the Bank evaluates the selected candidate within its internal framework; it does not disclose a public conversion formula.

AIIB’s careers site does not provide a full public table of internal grades, title equivalencies and salary minima or maxima. It is therefore unsafe to claim that every Associate occupies one grade or that an AIIB Principal equals a level at the World Bank, ADB or UN.

A job seeker should record the title exactly and use the minimum experience and responsibility in the vacancy to judge fit. If a range or grade is not published, the reliable salary information will come during recruitment or in the written offer.

Nationality, duty station and job families

The Join the team page welcomes applications from candidates inside and outside AIIB member countries, regardless of nationality. Particular vacancies can still include location, language, security or work-authorisation requirements.

Many globally recruited staff positions are based at AIIB headquarters in Beijing. The location field matters because relocation, visa support and benefits are attached to the actual duty station. AIIB states that eligible staff receive support for a diplomatic visa, relocation, global medical coverage, retirement and other benefits. These provisions are subject to the relevant rules and personal eligibility.

Job families include investment operations, sovereign and nonsovereign financing, project and portfolio management, economics, strategy, treasury, finance, risk, legal services, sustainability and environmental and social work, integrity, information technology, communications and corporate services. Support roles may be filled from the local labour market even when they sit in the same functional area.

Applying and assessing compensation

Applications are submitted through AIIB’s official Career Portal, where candidates can apply to current vacancies and track their submissions. Selection can include screening, interviews, technical exercises and checks. The notice should be read for any request for writing samples, transaction experience or language skills.

AIIB states that salaries are paid in US dollars. Its public benefits page describes the package, but it does not publish a full grade-by-grade salary table. Do not use crowdsourced estimates as if they were official bands.

For an offer, separate base salary from benefits and allowances. Confirm the contract term, probation, duty station, title, salary currency, relocation support and retirement contribution in writing. A global recruitment label says something about the search and mobility; it is not, by itself, a public grade.
