Transportation and Air Operations jobs at the United Nations

Transportation is a formal job family in the UN Secretariat’s Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain network. It covers surface transport, movement control, fleet management and aviation. Air Operations Officer is a specialist title within this family.

The jobs share an operational purpose, but road fleet experience does not automatically qualify someone for aviation work. Air operations have their own safety, regulatory and technical requirements.

Formal titles and staff categories

Professional titles include Transport Officer, Movement Control Officer, Air Operations Officer and Aviation Safety Officer. Senior and chief titles appear at higher grades. A vacancy may add a specialization such as Air Terminal, Strategic Air Operations or Fleet Management.

Transport Assistant, Movement Control Assistant, Dispatcher and Air Operations Assistant are usually General Service or Field Service posts. Drivers may be General Service, Trades and Crafts or Field Service staff according to the duty station. These categories have different recruitment, education and mobility rules from internationally recruited P posts.

Logistics Officers often coordinate with transport units, but Logistics is a separate job family. Logistics plans the wider flow and availability of goods and services. Transportation concentrates on movement assets and operations. Procurement of aircraft or vehicles is another separate professional function.

Responsibility by grade

At P-2, officers normally support schedules, fleet analysis, movement documentation or flight records under supervision. They may monitor contractor performance and prepare operational reports.

P-3 officers can coordinate a fleet, air terminal, movement-control function or group of contracted aircraft. Duties may include scheduling, tasking, regulatory documentation, performance monitoring and advice to operational clients.

A P-4 post often leads a transport or aviation unit, manages complex contracts and supervises Professional, Field Service and General Service staff. P-5 officers may head an integrated transport service for a major mission or a strategic operation serving several locations. Director roles control wider operational support structures.

Aviation safety may be structurally separate from air operations to preserve oversight independence. Applicants should read the reporting line instead of assuming that an operations officer owns safety assurance.

Education, experience and licences

Transport, logistics, aviation management, business administration and engineering commonly appear as degree fields. The list varies with the job. Secretariat Professional posts normally require an advanced university degree, with a first-level-degree alternative only where stated.

Air Operations vacancies may seek experience in commercial, military or state aviation, flight planning, airfield operations, air-terminal management, aircraft contracting or regulatory compliance. Pilot, dispatcher, air-traffic, maintenance or safety credentials may be required or desirable for particular roles.

Surface-transport posts can require fleet management, workshop oversight, road safety, movement control or dangerous-goods experience. A general supply-chain background may not meet a narrow fleet criterion.

Experience requirements follow the grade and the published vacancy. A minimum taken from one Air Operations notice should not be presented as a universal rule for every transportation post.

English or French is normally required. Operational vacancies may seek another language used by national aviation authorities, contractors or mission clients.

Where these jobs are located

Transportation Officers work in peacekeeping operations, special political missions, support offices, UN Headquarters and global service hubs. Air Operations Officers are concentrated in field operations and strategic support locations because missions depend on aircraft for passengers, cargo, medical evacuation and access to remote areas.

Recent official vacancy titles include Air Operations Officer, Air Operations Officer for an air terminal and posts in strategic air operations. Surface-transport roles may support large vehicle fleets, troop rotations, cargo movements or several remote offices.

The work can involve irregular hours, travel and high-consequence decisions. The Special Notice, contract type and duty-station conditions should be read alongside the grade.

Evidence for the application

State the transport mode, fleet or aircraft type, scale and operational setting. For fleet work, give vehicle numbers, locations, utilization and your authority over tasking, maintenance or replacement.

For air operations, distinguish flight following, scheduling, air-terminal work, airfield management, contract administration and safety oversight. Name applicable civil-aviation or organizational standards without exposing sensitive movement details.

Useful measures include fleet availability, aircraft utilization, on-time movement, maintenance turnaround, incident rates and cost. Explain how the figure was calculated and what you personally changed.

Contract experience should state whether you drafted operational requirements, monitored performance, certified service or handled non-performance. Participation as a user of a transport contract is different from responsibility for managing it.

Do not present passenger booking as flight operations or general warehouse dispatch as movement control. Related exposure can support an application, but professional evidence needs to match the vacancy’s function.

For a joint movement, state who approved the flight or route, who released the asset and who controlled the vendor. Then identify the coordination decision for which you were accountable.
