ICGEB careers, contracts and fellowships: a guide for applicants

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology is an independent intergovernmental organization for life-science research, training and technology transfer. It is not a UN agency and does not automatically apply United Nations Staff Regulations or UN P and G grades.

ICGEB has three main Components: Trieste in Italy, New Delhi in India and Cape Town in South Africa. It also works with affiliated and regional research centres. The organization named in a vacancy matters because a post at a partner or regional centre may be employed under that host institution’s rules rather than by ICGEB headquarters.

Several routes appear on one page

The official work with us page lists management, scientific, administrative and laboratory opportunities. Some are central ICGEB positions. Others are project-funded research posts such as Junior Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows, Research Associates or Research Scientists at a particular Component. Still others belong to an ICGEB Regional Research Centre.

Contract duration, funding source, salary and renewal possibilities therefore differ. A laboratory fellowship is not an international civil-service appointment, and a time-limited project researcher is not necessarily on the same conditions as a core administrative employee. Applicants should use the vacancy PDF or linked host notice as the legal description.

ICGEB does not publish a complete candidate-facing grade and salary table for all three Components. Public titles should not be converted into UN grades. “Group Leader,” “Research Scientist,” “Research Associate,” “Programme Officer” and “Assistant” indicate function and responsibility, but the specific notice establishes the level and compensation.

Fellowships are not staff grades

The Arturo Falaschi fellowship programme offers PhD, postdoctoral and short-term fellowships for eligible nationals of ICGEB member states. Fellowship calls identify the host laboratory, research proposal requirements, stipend, travel, insurance and family support where applicable. A fellow receives an award under programme rules, not a staff salary or grade.

ICGEB also runs joint and special fellowships with governments, universities and partner organizations. Eligibility can be narrower than the general programme. Some require nationality of an ICGEB member state; others target a region, career stage or scientific field. Admission to a PhD programme may also require separate university registration.

Do not treat every “JRF” notice as the international Arturo Falaschi programme. In India, JRF and SRF can be project titles tied to national funding and local pay rules. The linked announcement identifies the sponsor, duration and candidate eligibility.

Location and work permission

Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town operate in different national labour and academic systems. A post can be internationally open, restricted to nationals of member states, or locally recruited. Visas, residence permission, recognition of degrees and professional registration depend on the location and contract.

The Personal History Form requested for some central appointments does not replace any additional documents in the notice. Scientific posts may require publication lists, research statements, referee letters or a proposed programme. Local project jobs often ask for exact degrees, laboratory methods and eligibility under the funder’s rules.

ICGEB’s research spans infectious diseases, virology, immunology, cancer, cardiovascular and genetic disease, plant biology, agriculture, biofuels, structural biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, regulatory science and biotechnology development. Other work includes grants, training, technology transfer, biosafety, communications, finance, procurement, human resources, facilities and laboratory support.

Applying

Begin on the official vacancy page and then follow the instructions for that exact opportunity. Some applications use an ICGEB form and email submission; others lead to a Component or partner system. The deadline, time zone and required attachments can differ.

Before submitting, identify four things: the employing entity, central or project funding, employment or fellowship status, and the host location. Then present evidence appropriate to the route. A scientific application needs methods, publications and research contribution. A programme or administrative application needs delivery, budgets and stakeholder work. A fellowship application needs a coherent research fit with the proposed laboratory.

The most common mistake is to let ICGEB’s intergovernmental status erase local detail. It is one organization with a multinational scientific mission, but its opportunities do not form one public, uniform UN-style grade ladder.
