African Union contracts and grades: how to read an AU vacancy

How African Union regular, fixed-term and project appointments differ, what P, D and General Service labels show and where official information stops.

African Union vacancies usually state a contract type, grade, duty station and AU organ. Each field matters. A post at the Commission in Addis Ababa may not have the same conditions as a role at Africa CDC, AUDA-NEPAD, the AfCFTA Secretariat or a field mission.

The AU publishes its Staff Regulations and Rules and advertises jobs through a common recruitment portal. It does not, however, maintain one simple public careers table that maps every current title to a salary range.

Appointment types

The AU regulatory framework distinguishes continuing regular and regular staff from fixed-term staff. It also provides for appointments of limited duration, short-term appointments, project staff, field-mission staff, special appointments and seconded personnel.

A regular appointment and a fixed-term appointment are staff relationships governed by the applicable rules and letter of appointment. A fixed-term contract expires according to its terms and does not become regular merely because the person has worked for the Union for several years.

Project and field-mission appointments are tied to a programme, funding source or operational mandate. An appointment of limited duration is also time-bound. Consultants and special service contractors provide defined services outside the ordinary staff route. The public rules expressly warn that short-term staff, consultants, project personnel and field staff are not automatically absorbed into regular service; they must compete under the recruitment procedure.

The letter of appointment should state the title, category, grade, step, duration, probation and eligible allowances. Those written terms are more reliable than the label used in an informal vacancy repost.

Grades and categories

AU structure documents and official vacancy notices use professional grades P1 through P6 and director grades such as D1. General Service work appears under GSA and GSB labels, often with a number. Current vacancies can also use grades shaped by an organ’s approved structure.

The broad pattern is familiar: professional grades cover policy, technical and managerial work requiring university-level expertise, while General Service grades cover administrative, clerical, technical and operational support. Higher numbers within the P structure commonly accompany broader responsibility, but applicants should use the exact grade and job description rather than manufacture a title crosswalk.

The AU has not published a single current candidate-facing table that explains every P, D, GSA and GSB grade with a title and salary band for every duty station. Old restructuring documents and isolated job descriptions are not a safe substitute. A P3 in one approved structure cannot be re-labelled from a title found in another organ.

Salary is set by grade and step under the applicable AU scale. Benefits vary by contract. The AU employer information notes different medical and insurance arrangements for regular, fixed-term and short-term staff. A grade alone does not establish the full package.

Nationality, location and job families

Most AU staff vacancies require citizenship of an African Union Member State. The Union also considers geographic representation and Member State quotas. A programme can add narrower rules; the internship programme, for example, is restricted to Member State nationals. Always read the live vacancy.

Headquarters is in Addis Ababa, but jobs are also based in Midrand, Accra, Kigali, Nairobi, Cairo, Arusha and other regional or field locations. Locally recruited positions may require residence or work authorization. Internationally recruited posts may carry relocation or expatriate provisions if the rules and offer provide them.

Job families include peace and security, political affairs, trade, economic integration, health, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, education, science, law, governance, human rights, communications, finance, procurement, HR, audit and information technology.

Applying without guessing

Candidates apply through the official AU careers portal. The AU’s application guidance requires an online account and the AU Personal History Form. Current notices may also require the official AU CV template; when the notice says it is mandatory, a personal résumé does not replace it.

Screening is against the vacancy requirements, followed by assessment and interview for selected candidates. Qualifications, nationality and supporting documents are verified before appointment.

For pay, record the grade and step, ask which salary scale and duty-station adjustment apply, and separate base salary from allowances and benefits. Do not convert an AU P grade into a UN grade simply because the notation looks similar.
