This is an unpaid, six-month internship within the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Kyrgyzstan, focusing on communications, advocacy, and visibility. Fluency in both English and Russian is mandatory, while working knowledge of Kyrgyz is desirable. Duties and Responsibilities

Background This is an unpaid internship opportunity at the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Kyrgyzstan.

The RCO provides strategic coordination and support to the UN Country Team (UNCT) to ensure a coherent, effective, and impactful UN presence. The RCO leads on communications, advocacy, partnerships, and reporting, ensuring alignment with the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and the UN’s global priorities.

The Communications Interns will support the RCO’s communications and advocacy efforts, with opportunities to gain practical experience in multimedia content creation, media monitoring, and visibility of UN activities in Kyrgyzstan.

  • Provide logistical and functional support during press conferences, workshops, and high-level UN events.
  • Assist in drafting, translating and editing communication products (press releases, social media posts).
  • Support the development of multimedia content (photography, videography, editing, design of digital/print materials).
  • Contribute to UN communication campaigns and visibility activities.
  • Support media monitoring by compiling daily/weekly coverage of UN activities in national and regional media.
  • Assist with translations between English, Russian, and Kyrgyz, as required.
  • Maintain an organized archive of communications materials (news clippings, photos, videos, reports).
  • Perform other communications-related duties as requested.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme in communications, journalism, marketing, media studies, public relations, international relations, political or social sciences, or a related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in communications, journalism, marketing, media studies, public relations, international relations, political or social sciences, or a related field. (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated skills in photography, videography, and use of editing/design software (Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, Canva or similar).
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content management.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a multicultural team environment.
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and Russian are the working languages of the United Nations in Kyrgyzstan. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Russian, both oral and written, is required. Working knowledge of Kyrgyz language is a strong asset.
