The UN Young Professionals Programme: annual eligibility and examination route

The Young Professionals Programme is an examination route into the UN Secretariat’s Professional category. It is separate from the donor-funded Junior Professional Officer programme and from similarly named programmes at other institutions.

YPP details change each year. The participating countries, exam subjects, dates and screening arrangements come from the current UN Careers YPP page and examination announcement.

Core eligibility

The programme is open to nationals of Member States invited for that year because they are unrepresented or underrepresented in the Secretariat under the programme’s methodology. The list changes. Nationality from a previous year’s list does not establish eligibility for the next examination.

The annual announcement sets an age cut-off, commonly expressed as being 32 or younger at the end of the examination year or through a specific birth date. Applicants should apply the exact date in the current notice.

A first-level university degree, or an accepted equivalent of at least three years, must be relevant to the examination subject. The subject can change each year according to staffing needs.

Fluency in English or French is required under the published YPP framework. The examination notice defines how language is assessed and whether other language information is requested.

Work experience is generally not a basic eligibility requirement for the external YPP examination. It can become an additional screening factor when applications from one country and subject exceed the threshold described in the annual materials.

Annual exam subjects

YPP does not recruit every job family every year. One year may cover communications, another legal affairs, economics, information systems or human resources.

A relevant degree is assessed against the named subject. A candidate eligible by nationality and age can still be ineligible if the degree does not fall within the fields accepted for that examination.

Read the job opening’s education list rather than relying on the broad name of a faculty. Interdisciplinary degrees may require the applicant to show relevant coursework as instructed.

Application and screening

Applications are submitted through Inspira during a limited period. The YPP announcement functions as the job opening and includes screening questions and document requirements.

When applications exceed the permitted number from a country in an exam area, additional criteria can be used to reduce the group convoked to the examination. The current announcement explains those criteria.

A motivation statement cannot cure a missing nationality, degree, language or age condition. Enter all education and experience accurately because screening can rely on the structured fields.

Examination and roster

The examination is administered online and can contain several stages or test formats. Candidates who pass one stage receive instructions for the next. Dates and structure belong to the current cycle.

Successful candidates are placed on a roster for possible selection into suitable entry-level Professional posts, generally at P-1 or P-2. Roster placement does not guarantee a job offer.

Selections depend on available positions and profile match. Candidates may need to accept placement at a range of Secretariat duty stations. The current roster duration and placement conditions are stated in the YPP materials.

A selected candidate receives a staff appointment under the applicable rules. YPP is the recruitment route, not the contract type.

YPP, JPO and ordinary P-2 vacancies

JPO positions are financed through donor agreements and usually have donor nationality rules, an advanced degree and professional experience requirements. YPP uses the annual Secretariat examination criteria.

Ordinary P-2 vacancies are filled through their own job openings and generally require the experience shown in the notice. A person ineligible for YPP can still apply for ordinary Professional vacancies when qualified.

Funds, programmes and specialized agencies have separate early-career schemes. Passing an agency assessment does not place a candidate on the Secretariat YPP roster.

Preparing for a cycle

Check the official YPP page throughout the year and create an Inspira account before the application period. Gather nationality documents, degree records and translations early.

Study the examination subject through the official outline and sample materials for that cycle. General UN knowledge may be useful, but technical performance in the named field is central.

Ignore old country lists and unofficial promises of “YPP preparation access.” Application and examination participation do not require payment to the United Nations.
