Engineering jobs at the United Nations

UN Engineers design, review and maintain infrastructure for offices, field missions and technical programmes.

Engineering is a formal job family in the UN Secretariat’s Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain network. It includes civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and environmental engineering. The hiring office may need a designer, construction manager, technical reviewer or infrastructure adviser, so the discipline in the vacancy matters more than the generic title.

Formal titles and professional boundaries

Vacancies use Associate Engineer, Engineer and Senior Engineer. They may specify Civil Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Environmental Engineer or another discipline. Chief Engineer and Chief of Engineering can appear in larger field operations.

Engineering Assistant and Engineering Technician posts are usually in the General Service or Field Service categories. Those staff may inspect work, prepare drawings, maintain equipment or supervise contractors. Their recruitment basis and grade structure differ from internationally recruited P posts.

Facilities Management Officers also work on buildings, while Programme Management Officers may run infrastructure projects. An Engineer is classified for professional engineering responsibility. Contract administration alone does not make a post an engineering job, and responsibility for office maintenance is normally Facilities Management.

Responsibility at different grades

A P-2 engineer generally works on defined designs, calculations, specifications or inspections under review. The post may support procurement by preparing technical requirements and evaluating whether submissions meet them.

At P-3, engineers commonly manage projects with greater independence. Duties can include reviewing designs, preparing statements of work, supervising construction, certifying completed work, controlling changes and advising operational managers. Some P-3 posts supervise technicians, consultants or contractors.

P-4 engineers may lead an engineering unit, coordinate several projects or provide technical authority across multiple locations. P-5 officers can head a mission engineering service or a large infrastructure programme. Director roles carry wider responsibility for resources and organizational policy.

These are common patterns. A specialist post can carry a higher grade because of technical difficulty and risk even when it has few direct reports.

Qualifications are discipline-specific

Vacancies normally require an engineering degree related to the work. An electrical qualification will not necessarily meet a notice restricted to civil or structural engineering. Environmental engineering posts may accept environmental science or another field if the notice says so.

Secretariat Professional posts usually require an advanced university degree. Many openings accept a first-level university degree with additional qualifying experience. The substitution must appear in the vacancy. Professional registration, chartered status or a national engineering licence may be required or desirable, particularly where the officer signs designs or exercises statutory responsibility.

Experience requirements follow the grade and job. Design, construction supervision, infrastructure planning, contract administration and maintenance engineering are distinct. A vacancy may require work in difficult field conditions, seismic design, water systems, power generation or environmental infrastructure.

English or French is normally required for Secretariat Professional work. Another official or local language may be requested for work with authorities and contractors.

Typical working settings

Engineers work in headquarters premises, offices away from headquarters, peacekeeping and special political missions, and the UN Global Service Centre. Field projects include camps, offices, roads, airfields, water and wastewater systems, power supply and waste facilities.

A headquarters engineer may spend more time on design standards, capital planning and consultant oversight. A mission engineer may have to adapt designs to limited materials, security restrictions and urgent operational needs. Frequent site travel can be part of the post.

A field vacancy may also be roster-based or temporary. Candidates should read the Special Notice, duty-station classification and contract details separately from the professional grade.

Evidence to include in an application

Name the engineering discipline, project type, scale and your authority. State whether you produced the design, checked another engineer’s work, approved materials, supervised construction or certified completion.

For design work, identify the codes used and the documents personally prepared. For construction, describe cost, schedule, quality and safety responsibility. If you managed a contractor, explain how you reviewed progress, variations and defects.

For infrastructure planning, describe how demand, site constraints, lifecycle cost and operating capacity affected the solution. If emergency work required a temporary design, distinguish it from a permanent installation.

Quantify results carefully. A project delivered on time may reflect a large team. State your contribution and the decisions you controlled. Where technical details are confidential, describe the system and responsibility without disclosing protected plans.

Do not use a project-management title as proof of engineering experience. Recruiters need evidence that professional engineering judgment formed part of the work. Similarly, inspecting a contractor’s progress does not necessarily establish that you held design authority.
