Logistics and Supply Chain jobs at the United Nations

UN Logistics Officers plan the flow, storage and availability of supplies, equipment and services needed for headquarters and field operations.

Logistics and Supply Chain work supports the flow, storage and availability of goods and services across UN operations. In the Secretariat, Logistics is a formal job family in the Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain network. Its officers plan support, coordinate delivery, manage inventory and help operations obtain the equipment they need when and where it is required.

The title covers several specialties. A vacancy may focus on integrated planning, warehousing, fuel, assets, supply performance or support to military and police contingents. Applicants should read the organizational setting before treating two Logistics Officer posts as equivalent.

Formal titles and category boundaries

Professional titles include Associate Logistics Officer, Logistics Officer and Senior Logistics Officer. Larger operations may use Chief Logistics Officer, Chief of Integrated Support Services or Chief of Service Delivery.

Logistics Assistant, Supply Assistant, Warehouse Assistant and Property Management Assistant posts are normally in the General Service or Field Service categories. These staff can carry significant technical and operational responsibility, but their recruitment basis and grade structure differ from internationally recruited P posts.

Procurement, Transportation and Engineering are separate job families. Procurement manages the commercial acquisition process. Transportation manages movement assets and operations. Engineering provides professional technical responsibility for infrastructure. Logistics connects these functions through support planning and delivery, but logistics experience should not be used to claim procurement or engineering authority that belonged to another unit.

Responsibility at different grades

At P-2, an Associate Logistics Officer generally analyses requirements, tracks inventory or shipments, prepares support plans and monitors defined performance indicators under review.

P-3 Logistics Officers commonly manage a portfolio with greater independence. They may coordinate supply planning, warehousing, asset availability, contingent-owned equipment or distribution. Some advise operational clients, supervise support staff and coordinate several service providers.

A P-4 post often leads a logistics unit or an integrated support function. The officer may approve plans, manage risk, allocate resources and coordinate delivery across several locations. P-5 officers can head a major logistics service, manage large teams and advise mission or departmental leadership. Director roles oversee wider support or supply-chain structures.

A higher grade does not always mean a larger warehouse. A planning or performance role can be graded for its organizational reach, complexity and effect on many operations.

Education, experience and credentials

Supply-chain management, logistics, business administration, engineering, transport and related fields commonly appear in degree lists. A specialized vacancy may accept a narrower group of disciplines.

Secretariat Professional posts normally require an advanced university degree. Many openings permit a first-level degree with additional qualifying experience. The substitution must be stated in the vacancy.

Relevant experience may include demand planning, integrated supply planning, warehousing, inventory, distribution, assets, fuel, fleet support or field logistics. These specialties overlap, but they are not identical. A vacancy can require work in a conflict, emergency or remote operation.

Technical certificates may matter for dangerous goods, fuel, warehouse systems or another specialty. Project-management and supply-chain certifications can be required or desirable. They do not create a general exemption from education or experience requirements.

English or French is normally required. Field and regional posts may ask for another official or local language.

Typical employers and duty stations

Logistics Officers work in the Department of Operational Support, UN Headquarters, the UN Global Service Centre in Brindisi and Valencia, peacekeeping operations and special political missions. They also appear in offices managing large technical or field programmes.

A headquarters officer may work on global policy, performance or support planning. A service-centre post may coordinate strategic stocks and remote services. A mission officer deals more directly with local infrastructure, delivery routes, operational priorities and changing security conditions.

Some field openings are roster-based. The Special Notice may also describe travel, hardship or temporary funding. None of these conditions can be inferred from grade alone.

Evidence for the application

State what was supplied, where, at what scale and under which constraints. ‘Coordinated logistics’ is too broad. Describe demand planning, warehousing, inventory, assets, distribution or another function named in the vacancy.

For supply planning, explain how requirements were forecast, prioritized and matched with stock or procurement lead times. For warehouses, give approximate throughput, inventory value, number of locations and the controls used.

Useful measures include order lead time, fill rate, stock accuracy, asset availability, loss rate and delivery performance. Identify the baseline and your contribution to the result. Do not claim an organization-wide improvement when you managed one site or commodity.

Emergency deployment evidence should distinguish planning, coordination and on-site command. Property work should say whether you maintained records, conducted physical verification, approved write-off or managed the full lifecycle.

ERP and analytics experience is clearer when the application names the modules, data and decisions involved. Listing Umoja, SAP or a dashboard without describing the work provides little screening evidence.

In a shipment example, identify who raised the requisition, who selected the vendor, who arranged movement and who accepted delivery. Claim the logistics decisions that were yours.
