Reviewing a UN or international organization job offer

Before accepting, confirm the employer, contract, grade or fee, duty station, benefits, start conditions and every cost that the written offer assigns.

A verbal selection message is welcome news, but the decision should use the written offer and governing terms. Job title and monthly pay do not show the full employment relationship.

First identify who will sign the contract. “UN project” can refer to a Secretariat office, fund, programme, implementing partner, staffing vendor or government unit. Each can offer different legal status.

Contract and duration

Record the exact appointment or engagement type, start date and end date. For staff, determine whether the appointment is temporary, fixed-term or another type under the employer’s rules.

Check probation, notice, renewal wording and any condition tied to funding, medical clearance, references, visa or security approval. An expected extension is not an approved extension.

For consultancy, list deliverables, acceptance process, payment dates, maximum working days, intellectual property and termination. For volunteer or internship offers, use the programme’s Conditions of Service.

Grade, step, salary or fee

For a staff offer, confirm category, grade and step. Ask which salary scale and effective date apply. For internationally recruited P and D posts, identify the duty-station post adjustment separately.

List payroll deductions, including pension and medical insurance where applicable. Ask how staff assessment and any national tax arrangements are handled for the individual case.

For non-staff work, determine whether the fee is daily, monthly, deliverable-based or all-inclusive. Check currency, bank charges, payment after acceptance and responsibility for taxes and social contributions.

Do not compare a consultant’s gross fee with a staff member’s net remuneration without pricing insurance, leave, pension, equipment and unpaid gaps.

Duty station and work location

Confirm the official duty station and the place where work may be performed. A flexible or remote practice can change, while the appointment remains tied to the duty station.

For local recruitment, confirm work authorization and whether relocation is entirely personal. For international recruitment, ask about appointment travel, family travel, shipment and settling-in support.

A field offer should state family designation, hardship class, R&R cycle, security conditions and applicable allowances. Use current designations for the expected start period.

Health, pension and leave

Ask when medical coverage begins, which plan applies, the employee contribution and whether eligible dependants can enroll. Check coverage while travelling or working remotely.

Confirm UNJSPF participation or the organization’s separate retirement plan. A contract shorter than six months can have different participation timing under Fund rules.

Record annual, sick and parental leave conditions. Consultants usually do not receive paid leave under staff rules, so the schedule must account for time unavailable.

Family and education

If family members will move, ask which people are recognized as eligible dependants and which travel or residence support applies.

Education grant, boarding assistance and school travel have specific staff, appointment and location conditions. Obtain written confirmation before signing a school contract.

For a non-family duty station, dependants cannot ordinarily reside at the duty station under the security designation. Compare the allowance with the real cost and effect of separation.

Practical costs

List visa, medical examination, travel, shipment, temporary housing, deposits, local transport, insurance and equipment. Assign each cost to the organization or individual based on the written terms.

Never pay a recruiter or intermediary to secure the appointment, visa or payroll. Verify unexpected instructions through the official human resources contact.

Check the timing of first salary or milestone payment and maintain enough cash for the gap. A settling-in grant can have processing conditions.

Professional conditions

Review reporting line, functions, travel frequency, supervision, performance evaluation, outside-activity restrictions, confidentiality and conflict-of-interest obligations.

If the role differs materially from the vacancy, ask for clarification before signing. A new duty should not be accepted on the assumption that classification or fee will be revised later.

For fixed-location work, research housing, commuting, health care, schools and security from reliable current sources. An allowance table cannot answer whether the arrangement is workable for a particular family.

Acceptance

Note the deadline and required method. Ask questions through the named HR or contracting contact and keep the answers.

Do not resign from current employment or incur major costs while mandatory clearances remain unresolved unless the risk is understood. Confirm when the offer becomes effective and whether any condition can still prevent entry on duty.

A careful review can end with acceptance, negotiation where permitted or a decision to decline. The useful comparison is the complete written package and its risks, not the organization’s name alone.
