Job openings, temporary job openings and generic job openings at the UN

A vacancy can recruit for one post, a temporary need or a roster of similar roles. The opening type is separate from grade and should be read with the Special Notice.

UN Secretariat vacancy titles can include Job Opening, Temporary Job Opening or Generic Job Opening. These labels describe the staffing exercise. They do not replace the grade, appointment type or duty station.

A P-4 Temporary Job Opening remains a P-4 post. A Generic Job Opening can lead to roster placement rather than one immediate vacancy. The Special Notice explains limits that the title cannot.

Position-specific job openings

An ordinary job opening is commonly linked to a particular post in a named office and duty station. The notice gives responsibilities, grade, category and application criteria.

The selection process can also produce rostered candidates in addition to the person selected. Being recommended for the opening does not guarantee that everyone recommended receives an appointment.

The contract offered after selection may be fixed-term, continuing under a special route, or another staff appointment allowed by the notice and rules. Do not infer duration from the absence of “temporary” in the vacancy title.

Temporary job openings

A Temporary Job Opening, often shown as TJO, fills a time-limited need. It may cover an urgent requirement, temporary replacement, surge workload or a post pending a longer process.

The successful candidate generally receives a temporary appointment under the applicable conditions. The notice should state the anticipated duration or funding context.

Temporary does not mean junior, part-time or informal. TJOs appear across Professional, Director, General Service and Field Service levels. The work can carry full responsibility at the advertised grade.

Temporary appointments expire under their terms and carry no expectation of renewal or conversion. Applicants should plan around the written end date.

A TJO can also have a shorter posting period or eligibility limits described in the Special Notice. Read those clauses before spending time on the application.

Generic job openings

A Generic Job Opening, or GJO, recruits for a group of similar functions and can be used to establish or replenish a roster. The notice describes a generic profile rather than the exact tasks of one office.

Candidates can go through screening and assessment for the family and level. Recommended candidates may then be placed on a roster for matching openings.

Selection from a roster still depends on a vacancy, profile match and hiring decision. A GJO result is not a contract waiting for a duty station to be chosen.

Generic descriptions can cover several settings. Applicants should show transferable evidence across the listed functions while remaining precise about their own experience.

Examination and roster openings

Young Professionals Programme and Competitive Examinations for Language Positions are advertised through openings but follow their examination rules. Successful candidates enter the applicable roster or reserve list and may later be selected.

A talent pool, pipeline or consultant roster at another UN organization can have different rules. The word “roster” does not create one system across the UN family.

The Special Notice

The Special Notice can state whether the opening is temporary, project-funded, local, restricted to internal or rostered candidates, subject to funding, or part of a special staffing exercise.

It can also describe duty-station conditions, candidate eligibility, appointment limits and treatment of current staff. These details are part of the vacancy, even when they appear after the main qualifications.

Save the notice when applying. The public page may later close, while an assessment invitation assumes the candidate knows the conditions accepted.

Opening type, grade and contract

Keep three questions separate. Opening type explains the recruitment exercise. Grade explains the classified level. Appointment type explains the legal employment term.

For example, a P-3 TJO is a temporary recruitment exercise for P-3 work and normally leads to a temporary appointment. A P-3 GJO may assess candidates for a P-3 roster. A position-specific P-3 opening can offer a fixed-term appointment if stated.

Consultancy notices do not use staff appointment rules even when posted on UN Careers. Category and Level will identify Consultants or another non-staff grouping.

Application strategy

For a position-specific opening, tailor evidence to the office, mandate and exact duties. For a GJO, cover the common functions and show readiness for the possible settings described.

For a TJO, state availability accurately. A quick process can still require assessments, reference checks and notice periods.

Check job number, deadline, category, grade, duty station, opening type and Special Notice before applying. Those fields together explain what the organization is actually recruiting.
