Security Information Analyst Internship

A IIIM-Syria internship is unpaid and it is designed to be in-person (based on Geneva, Switzerland) and full-time (40 hours per week), with possibility of flexible arrangements to be discussed with a successful candidate. The internship is expected to be for a period of approximately 6 months. Regular Working Hours 9h00-18h00 (Monday to Friday).

The internship is expected to be for a period between 3 months minimum and 6 months maximum, starting as soon as possible. The specific start dates and duration may be adjusted after discussion with the successful candidate.

The position of Security Information Analyst Intern is located in the Operational Support Section (OSS) and Security Coordination Office (SCO) of the “International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011” (IIIM), located in Geneva, Switzerland. This internship is intended to support the Mechanism’s understanding and awareness of the evolving security environment and the factors that may impact the safety and security of Mechanism personnel and individuals cooperating with the Mechanism. The Security Information Analyst Intern will contribute to the monitoring, review, and maintenance of Security Threat and Risk Assessment (STRA) documentation, helping to ensure that assessments remain accurate, up to date, and reflective of the current security situation in the Syrian Arab Republic and other areas relevant to the Mechanism’s mandate. The SCO is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Mechanism personnel, while the OSS supports the protection and security of persons cooperating with the Mechanism. The intern will work under the joint supervision of the SCO and the Witness Protection Officer. Under supervision, the Security Information Analyst Intern will be part of the team responsible for the following duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: • Conduct targeted open-source research and analytical assessments related to security developments and emerging risks; • Monitor and maintain situational awareness regarding political, security, economic, social, and technological developments that may affect the safety and security of personnel and cooperating individuals; • Research, compile, and summarize relevant information related to the evolving security environment in the Syrian Arab Republic and surrounding operational contexts; • Support the preparation, review, and updating of Security Threat and Risk Assessments (STRA); • Assist in identifying trends, patterns, and potential security implications through analytical reporting; • Prepare analytical summaries, briefing materials, and presentations for internal use; • Contribute to periodic updates and presentations related to STRA findings and recommendations; • Ensure the confidentiality and secure handling of all information accessed during the internship; • Complete assigned tasks accurately and within established deadlines; • Work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a multicultural team environment; • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, discretion, and respect toward colleagues and stakeholders.

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening: Security Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Intelligence Studies, Conflict Studies, International Security, or Criminology. Other closely related disciplines not identified above may also be considered. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work  experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.   Desirable qualifications and competencies include: • Strong analytical and research skills; • Familiarity with open-source research methodologies; • Ability to synthesize complex information into concise analytical products; • Strong written and verbal communication skills; • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and MS Teams; • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality; • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment; • Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and attention to detail. Candidates should also demonstrate a willingness to understand and respect diverse perspectives, cultures, and viewpoints.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable. ​

For in-person internships, candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in Switzerland before they depart for Geneva to begin their internship.
