UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Information Management Unit at UNHCR Bucharest. Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

Since the outbreak of the international conflict in Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Romania has recorded more than 11 million border crossings of refugees from Ukraine, resulting in a total of 201,752 individuals being granted Temporary Protection by the end December 2025. Over the same period 25,188 asylum applications have been submitted. While border crossings have continued to increase from year to year, from 2.5 million in 2022 to 2.9 million in 2025, the number of individuals seeking international protection in Romania has steadily declined from some 98,000 in 2022 to 28,000 in 2025. Nonetheless, these numbers still present a situation in which Romania is receiving a considerable number of new arrivals, mainly due to the situation in Ukraine.

In the fifth year of Romania’s response to the Ukraine refugee situation, the Information Management (IM) Unit plays a central role in shaping evidence-based refugee narratives, countering misinformation and negative discourse regarding refugees in the country, and supporting data-driven advocacy, fundraising, and strategic decision-making.

The position
The IM intern will work in Bucharest, Romania, within the Information Management Unit. The intern will provide support on IM activities linked with organizing a DataThon. The event will aim to utilize big datasets of refugee-related data to produce actionable insights, innovative analyses, and evidence-based narratives on forced displacement. The DataThon will bring together up to 40 participants, including students, researchers, data scientists, and practitioners, and will take place over a two-week period in a hybrid format. The selected intern will support the coordination, organization, and administrative management of the event.

Duties and responsibilities
• Assist the IM Unit in planning a DataThon utilizing refugee-related data
• Assist in identifying partners for the event and support the communication with them
• Design the participant materials
• Draft various information products and materials for promoting the event
• Assist with the logistical and administrative preparations
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor

• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR
• Not have exhausted the maximum cumulative internship period with UNHCR, including any prior internships (8 months for full-time and 12 months for part-time)

• Strong analytical, organizational and verbal communication skills
