Since 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has worked to preserve human dignity and relieve suffering caused by war and armed violence.

We engage with authorities and armed forces on all sides, often confidentially, pressing for access to detainees to improve their living conditions and urging compliance with international humanitarian law to protect non-combatants, including from digital threats.
Purpose of the role
The Private Partnerships & Philanthropy (PPP) Specialist enacts the ICRC private fundraising strategy and secures donations from the private sector.The postholder manages, develops and prospects a portfolio of individual major donors (HNWI & UHNWI) in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Germany and Austria, and other priority countries.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of a global strategy and action plan for major donors (including Ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs), family foundations, and family offices).
- Manage, develop and grow a portfolio of major-donors in Switzerland and priority countries in alignment with the resource mobilization framework of the RCRC Movement, by building and maintaining personalized relationships to ensure long-term financial support to ICRC operations. This includes, where possible, working in acquiring, or, in other places, stewarding and maintaining new donors and encouraging them to evolve in their supporter journey by increasing their commitment.
- Plan and execute targeted engagement actions, monitoring donor interactions, and proactively identifying opportunities to advance each relationship.
- Collaborate with colleagues to design and develop tailor-made fundraising tools and products for multi-year funding support from interested major donors and prospects in his/her portfolio.
- Contribute to the development of concept notes and proposals, as well as content for fundraising events; organize, manage and animate such events together with the relevant support teams.
- Identify, research, and qualify new major donor prospects using internal databases and external sources and define donor targets according to affinity and alignment with ICRC’s mandate and develop targeted outreach strategies for prospects and new donors.
- Contribute to the strategic positioning and evolution of private sector fundraising in the assigned markets, identifying trends, risks and opportunities and translating them into actionable priorities aligned with the ICRC’s resource mobilization objectives.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of engagement and funding models adapted to private sector partners, ensuring alignment between donor expectations, humanitarian priorities and institutional constraints.
Experience and education background
- University degree in marketing, business administration, fundraising, communication, international affairs, or social sciences, or a relevant equivalent gained through professional experience in a relevant field.
- A minimum of 6 to 9 years of professional experience, with a significant track record in business development, major donor fundraising, or a related discipline.
- Native German or Swiss-German speaker, with full professional proficiency in English. French or Italian would be a strong additional asset.
- Excellent computer proficiency.
- Solid understanding in fundraising principles and approaches from HNWIs for charitable causes
- Ability to manage a robust account management portfolio.
- In-depth knowledge of the philanthropic ecosystems
- Demonstrated experience in summarizing complex subjects into simple, compelling and actionable concepts and ability to share across a number of audiences.
- Experience in drafting communication and engagement strategies.

Additional duties
- The post will involve some work beyond normal working hours, as evening events take place.
- Travel within Switzerland or in the other relevant countries maybe be required for personalized relationships.
- Represent the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and during events, and avoid any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image.
