About this role
The Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) is seeking a Public Information Intern to support the Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) based in Kathmandu, Nepal. This unpaid, full-time internship lasts 2-6 months with a desired start date of September 2026. The intern will assist with strategic communications, public outreach, and media products for the organization's website and social media platforms. Key responsibilities include drafting and editing publications such as fact sheets, brochures, and newsletters; preparing presentations and visual content; conducting background research on disarmament, arms control, and non-proliferation issues; and providing logistical and administrative support for meetings, workshops, and seminars. The role focuses on supporting programmatic areas including Weapons of Mass Destruction, Conventional Arms, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Education, and cross-cutting issues like Gender, Youth, and Emerging Technologies. The ideal candidate is a student in the final year of a first university degree or a graduate student with a field of study closely related to the internship. Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of another UN official language is advantageous. The intern reports to the Director of UNRCPD and works under the supervision of a professional staff member.

Duties and Responsibilities
UNRCPD is part of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and is located in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Regional Centre assists countries in Asia and the Pacific in achieving their peace, security and disarmament goals by providing substantive support, coordinating activities at the subregional, regional and international levels, and facilitating information-sharing on global and regional disarmament initiatives.
In accordance with its mandate, UNRCPD supports Member States, upon request, in implementing international agreements aimed at preventing and combating the illicit flows of conventional arms, promoting dialogue and confidence-building on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, addressing peace and security challenges through the engagement of women and youth, and advancing peace and disarmament education. To support these efforts, the Regional Centre organizes seminars, workshops and training activities.
The intern will provide support in one or more of UNRCPD's key programmatic areas:
- Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Conventional Arms and Ammunition
- Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education
- Cross-cutting Issues – Gender, Youth and Emerging Technologies Security Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, assigned tasks and the duration of the internship. Under the supervision of the assigned officer, the intern may undertake duties including, but not limited to, the following:
- Assist the Office with strategic communications and public outreach activities.
- Assist in preparing media and communication products for the Office's website and social media platforms.
- Assist in drafting and editing publications, including fact sheets, brochures, newsletters and donor updates.
- Assist in preparing presentations, outreach materials and visual content to support programme activities.
- Conduct background research and compile information related to disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation issues.
- Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, seminars and training activities, including providing logistical and administrative support as required.
- Assist in preparing meeting notes, briefing materials and other supporting documentation.
- Contribute ideas to support communication, outreach and design initiatives, as appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in, or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, b) be enrolled in, or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) APPLICANTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAMME.
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
