Description
WBG Pioneers, the World Bank Group’s Internship Program, offers undergraduate and postgraduate students a high impact learning experience at the heart of global development. Participants gain hands on experience in a diverse and dynamic environment, contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and connect with international professionals working to end poverty on a livable planet.
Background/Organizational Context
The World Bank’s Environmental and Social
Framework (ESF) sets out the Bank’s commitments to identify and manage
environmental and social risks in projects. As the Bank’s Central Asia
portfolio grows, demand is increasing for professionals with practical
grounding in ESF policies, data systems, and project supervision.
The internship will bridge the gap between
academic training and applied operational experience for graduate and doctoral
students in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It will strengthen the pipeline of
locally knowledgeable ESF practitioners and provide focused support to World
Bank country teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
• ESF data management: compile implementation status information, organize stakeholder engagement records, maintain project-level tracking tools, and become familiar with internal data and reporting requirements.
• Training and guidance materials: draft practical ESF reference products, including fact sheets, guidance notes, translated summaries, or training presentations on environmental assessment, labor standards, community engagement, grievance redress, and related topics.
• Thematic supervision support for low-risk projects: under close supervision of senior ESF specialists, review implementation reports, track compliance with environmental and social commitments, help review Environmental and Social Assessment reports and E&S Progress Reports, and prepare summary notes for project teams.
• ESF learning: study ESS1–ESS10 and key procedural requirements, join mentored discussions and assigned readings, attend relevant team meetings and learning events, and participate in client or stakeholder engagements and site visits where feasible.
Mentorship and Learning Support
• Each intern will be assigned a dedicated ESF specialist based in Uzbekistan or Tajikistan as primary mentor.
• Where the cohort includes interns from both countries, cross-country peer learning will be encouraged through joint sessions and shared assignments.
• The internship will start with an orientation on the World Bank, the ESF, and the country portfolio, followed by a tailored work plan with clear deliverables and learning goals.
• Interns will have weekly one-on-one mentor check-ins, a structured mid-point review, and an end-of-internship reflection session.
• Upon successful completion, interns will receive a written performance summary and reference letter.
Selection Criteria
• Currently enrolled in the final year of a Master’s degree program or enrolled in a PhD program at a university in Uzbekistan or Tajikistan.
• Academic background in environmental science, environmental engineering, social sciences, land management and land law, land cadaster, geoinformatics, public policy, or a closely related field.
• Strong written and spoken English; knowledge of Uzbek and/or Tajik relevant to the internship location; knowledge of Russian is an advantage.
0–6 years of relevant professional experience and demonstrated interest in environmental and social sustainability, international development, or public sector policy.
Preferred competencies:
• Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills; effective written and verbal communication; ability to work in diverse, team-based environments; strong organization and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines; familiarity with the World Bank ESF or equivalent environmental and social standards is an asset.
Note: Please limit your applications to a maximum of three positions. Applications exceeding this limit will not be considered.
WBG Culture Attributes:
1. Sense of urgency: Anticipate and quickly respond to the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
2. Thoughtful risk-taking: Challenge the status quo and push boundaries to achieve greater impact.
3. Empowerment and accountability: Empower yourself and others to act and hold each other accountable for results.
The World Bank Group values diversity and encourages all qualified candidates who are nationals of World Bank Group member countries to apply, regardless of gender, gender identity, religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability. Sub-Saharan African nationals, Caribbean nationals, and female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
