The Financial Institutions Group (FIG) within the International Finance Corporation (IFC) is seeking an Associate Investment Officer or Investment Officer based in Quito, Ecuador, to support the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) team. The role focuses on growing and developing business and managing a select investment portfolio of clients, potentially extending across the LAC region. Key responsibilities include demonstrating thorough knowledge of banking and financial institutions, developing and evaluating a pipeline of high-quality investment opportunities, and identifying ways to increase social development impact. The incumbent will lead transactions, develop financial structures for straightforward and complex deals, and structure, negotiate, and close new transactions, capital increases, and equity sales with a focus on client and asset quality. This involves evaluating new opportunities, processing mandates, conducting due diligence, and negotiating term sheets. The role also requires participating in negotiations to overcome impasses and proactively managing multiple portfolio investments. The final job title will be determined by the Hiring Manager based on the candidate's qualifications.

The Financial Institution Group (FIG) is one of IFC’s key Departments responsible for a significant portion of IFC’s business volume, profitability, and development reach, approximately 40%. FIG engages in a wide range of sub-sectors including Microfinance, SME, Gender, Climate, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing, Distressed Assets, and other areas.

The FIG’s Latin America and the Caribbean team (FIG LAC) is based across the LAC region with main hubs and locations in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina and Panama. The team members work on both new business development and processing, and portfolio management across the region.

The FIG LAC team is seeking to hire an Associate Investment Officer or an Investment Officer based in Quito, Ecuador, to help grow and develop business and manage select investment portfolio clients mainly in the respective hub, potentially extending across the LAC region.

The final job title will be defined by the Hiring Manager based on the overall qualification of the selected candidate. 

Duties and Accountabilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of banking, financial institutions and related industry knowledge.
  • Help develop and evaluate a pipeline of good quality investment opportunities. Identify and evaluate opportunities to increase the social development impact of new or portfolio projects.
  • Lead transactions and develop appropriate financial structures for straightforward and complex transactions.
  • Structure, negotiate and close new transactions, capital increases, equity sales, as necessary, with a strong focus on client and asset quality (includes evaluating new opportunities, processing mandates, due diligence, negotiating term sheets and other documents).
  • Participate in negotiations; use negotiation skills to overcome impasses and finalize negotiations in straightforward transactions.
  • Take responsibility for the proactive management of multiple portfolio investments.

Selection Criteria

  • Master's degree required, preferably an MBA or an equivalent postgraduate qualification with a specialization in Finance.
  • At least 4-8 years’ working experience in finance with a proven track-record of supporting the origination process, structuring and closing investments. Strong preference for someone with investment experience in the financial sector.
  • Strong financial and credit skills; demonstrated ability to structure a variety of financial instruments (debt and equity).
  • Modeling skills.
  • Client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on clients’ needs effectively.
  • Facility to work successfully in multicultural teams and across boundaries.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Highly motivated, committed to highest ethical standards.
  • Genuine commitment to sustainable development.
  • Fluency in English written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas succinctly, clearly, and persuasively is required, along with fluency in Spanish.
