Working at UNIDO: staff posts, project appointments and ISA consultancies

UNIDO’s workforce supports industrial policy, technical cooperation and projects financed for defined periods. Its recruitment site therefore carries staff vacancies, Project Appointments and consultancy opportunities under Individual Service Agreement labels.

The category and contract must be read together. ISA-P3 resembles a P grade in its label, but it is listed by UNIDO as a consultancy opportunity rather than a P-3 staff appointment.

Staff categories

UNIDO Careers lists International Professionals, National Professional Officers and General Services.

International Professionals are recruited globally and are expected to serve at different duty stations. They work in technical, analytical, managerial and leadership functions. Vacancies use P grades and senior D grades under the UN common-system structure.

National Professional Officers are nationals of the country where they are stationed and work in a national context. UNIDO publishes NO-A through NO-D, with standard minimum experience of one, three, five and seven years respectively. An advanced university degree is the normal educational requirement.

General Service staff perform administrative, secretarial, clerical and specialized support work. They are locally recruited and must be nationals or lawful residents of the duty-station country. UNIDO vacancies show G grades, with education and experience requirements in the notice.

Staff appointments and project work

Regular staff vacancies identify their appointment type and duration in the announcement. Applicants should use that wording rather than assuming that every graded P or G post is the same kind of appointment.

A Project Appointment is a non-career staff appointment for a specific programme or project and cannot extend beyond the financing programme’s lifetime. Project appointees have UNIDO staff status.

UNIDO states that a Project Appointment carries no expectation of conversion, extension or renewal, regardless of its duration or category. It can be used for Professional or General Service functions, and its education and experience standards follow the relevant category.

Temporary Support positions are short-term General Service assignments used when offices face peak workloads. They are locally recruited support posts, not an informal entry route to International Professional work. The vacancy supplies the precise appointment conditions.

Individual Service Agreements and other routes

UNIDO publishes consultancy opportunities under ISA labels, including international forms such as ISA-P2 and national forms such as ISA-NOB. These are Individual Service Agreement categories used for consultancy engagements.

The ISA label can help UNIDO set the level of an assignment, but it does not make the contractor a staff member at the corresponding P or NO grade. Applicants should describe it on a CV as an ISA consultancy and retain the exact level.

Consultancy terms of reference govern deliverables, duration, fee, travel and insurance. UNIDO also runs JPO, Partner Expert and internship programmes. JPO and Partner Expert appointments depend on sponsoring agreements, while internships have separate eligibility and status.

Main job families

UNIDO recruits in industrial policy, manufacturing, quality infrastructure, trade capacity, investment promotion and private-sector development. Technical cooperation projects create roles in project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

Energy and environment work covers industrial energy efficiency, renewable energy, circular economy, chemicals management, pollution prevention, climate technology and decarbonization. Agribusiness, food processing, value chains, small-enterprise development and digital transformation are other frequent fields.

Specialists work with governments, industry, financial institutions and donors. Operational job families include procurement, finance, human resources, legal affairs, communications, partnerships, information technology and administration.

A Programme Officer vacancy may require industrial economics, engineering or donor-funded project management. The organizational context usually reveals which background is central.

International and local recruitment

International Professional posts are globally recruited and can involve mobility. NPO roles require nationality of the duty-station country. General Service and Temporary Support roles require local nationality or lawful residence as stated.

ISA consultancies can be international, national or home-based. The prefix is an official UNIDO contract label; it should not be used to infer relocation or staff benefits. Read the location and travel clauses.

All categories are advertised through UNIDO Careers. Create a profile, select a vacancy and submit through the portal by the deadline. Job alerts can be set for category and location.

For project roles, state budgets, donors, counterpart institutions and outputs. Technical applicants should name relevant industrial processes, standards or technologies. ISA applicants need to answer the specific assignment rather than submit a generic staff application.
