Working at UNDRR: contracts, grades and career paths

How UNDRR hires staff, consultants and interns, with official UN grades and appointment rules for disaster risk reduction careers.

UNDRR supports countries and partners in reducing disaster risk and implementing the Sendai Framework. Its roles span policy, risk analysis, regional coordination, data and advocacy. UNDRR is an entity of the United Nations Secretariat, so its staff positions follow Secretariat categories, grades and appointment rules.

There is no separate UNDRR grade scale for applicants to decode. The formal category, grade and appointment type in the job opening are the authoritative terms.

Staff posts

International disaster-risk policy and coordination posts at UNDRR are generally classified in the Professional category, with Director grades used for senior leadership. Regional and country work may be assigned to National Professional Officers who are nationals of the country of service. General Service staff are recruited locally for programme and office support. Applicants should use the grade printed on the vacancy, since the same subject matter can appear at several levels.

Grade and contract answer different questions. Grade describes the classified level of the job. Appointment type describes the duration and status of the employment relationship.

Under the UN Secretariat appointment framework, fixed-term appointments are granted for a specified period, normally between one and five years. They can be renewed, but renewal is never guaranteed. Temporary appointments cover short-term requirements, ordinarily for less than one year, and do not create an expectation of extension or conversion.

Continuing appointments are open-ended and governed by staff eligibility rules. They are not normally an appointment type advertised to first-time external candidates. If a UNDRR vacancy says temporary, candidates should assess it on that basis even when the programme itself is expected to continue.

Consultants, interns and related opportunities

UNDRR also advertises consultancies for defined technical work. A consultant might prepare risk analysis, evaluate a programme, design guidance or support a particular event. Consultants and individual contractors are non-staff personnel under the Secretariat’s official framework. Their contracts are based on the stated services or deliverables. They do not carry an official P, NO or General Service grade.

Internships are separate learning assignments and should not be described as junior Professional appointments. UN Volunteer, JPO, secondment and fellowship opportunities may arise under their own rules. The organisation hosting the work is not always the organisation issuing the contract, so the notice must be checked.

UNDRR’s work with us page directs applicants to UN Careers for Secretariat openings and also covers consultancies and internships. It warns that only serious candidates are contacted and that the UN does not charge fees during recruitment.

Areas of work

Policy officers advise on national and regional disaster risk reduction strategies, governance and implementation of the Sendai Framework. Data specialists work on Sendai Framework monitoring, disaster-loss information, risk knowledge and indicators. Other teams focus on early warning, climate and disaster resilience, risk financing, resilient infrastructure and engagement with cities or the private sector.

Regional offices need staff who can work with governments, intergovernmental bodies, UN country teams and civil society. Programme managers handle projects, budgets, results and donor relationships. Partnerships, communications, advocacy, administration, finance, procurement, human resources and information technology remain essential career fields.

A vacancy may call for disaster risk reduction experience, but the expected profile can be narrower: public policy, economics, climate science, data systems, urban resilience or stakeholder coordination. Read the duties and competencies closely instead of relying on the organisation’s broad mandate.

Do not confuse UNDRR jobs with sector listings

PreventionWeb, which is managed by UNDRR, publishes information for the wider disaster risk reduction community. Its job listings can include roles from governments, NGOs, universities and other organisations. A vacancy appearing there is not automatically employment with UNDRR.

For a UNDRR staff application, use UN Careers and Inspira. Confirm that the department or office is UNDRR and record the job opening number. An official consultancy notice may specify a different submission method, which should be followed exactly.

Applicants should check six facts before applying: employing or contracting entity, staff or non-staff status, category, grade if applicable, appointment or contract type, and duty station. For NO and General Service roles, review nationality and local recruitment conditions. For consultancies, examine fees, deliverables, travel and insurance provisions.

That short administrative check helps avoid two costly assumptions: that every disaster-risk vacancy is an UNDRR job, and that every person working with UNDRR holds a UN staff appointment.
