The Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group seeks an Intern for Communication, Advocacy, and Youth Mobilization on Gender Equality in Skopje. The role focuses on promoting gender equality and human rights through inclusive participation and social change, with a strong emphasis on youth engagement. The intern will support the design and implementation of communication and advocacy initiatives tailored to young audiences, including developing messaging, briefing notes, and digital content. Responsibilities also include mobilizing youth groups and student associations, supporting the organization of dialogues and events, and coordinating with local NGOs and stakeholders. The intern will assist in knowledge management by reviewing research, maintaining stakeholder databases, and supporting UN reporting processes. The ideal candidate is a current student in the final year of a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD programme, or a recent graduate, with a field of study closely related to the internship. Strong interest in gender equality, good understanding of communication tools, and proficiency in MS Office are required. Fluency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of Macedonian and Albanian is desirable. This is an unpaid internship with a duration from August 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group works to promote gender equality and human rights across UN initiatives, with a particular emphasis on inclusive participation and social change. Communication, advocacy, and youth engagement are key pillars for advancing gender equality, amplifying young people’s voices, and fostering intergenerational dialogue on gender-related issues.

Under the supervision of the RCO and in coordination with the Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group, the Intern will: Communication and Advocacy

  • Support the design and implementation of communication and advocacy initiatives focused on gender equality, with a strong youth-oriented approach.
  • Contribute to the development of advocacy messages, key talking points, briefing notes, and visibility materials tailored to young audiences.
  • Assist in developing communication content (e.g. social media posts, short articles, visuals, presentations) to promote gender equality campaigns and UN joint initiatives.
  • Support data-informed advocacy by contributing to simple data visualizations and youth-friendly communication products.
  • Assist RCO in supporting UNCT on communication activities. Youth Mobilization and Engagement
  • Support engagement with youth groups, student associations, youth-led CSOs and networks working on gender equality, women empowerment and human rights.
  • Assist in mobilizing young people to participate in consultations, campaigns, public events, and awareness-raising activities on gender issues.
  • Support the organization of youth-focused dialogues, workshops, panel discussions, and outreach events related to gender equality. Coordination and Events
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of joint UN gender campaigns, including coordination of partners and follow-up with stakeholders.
  • Support consultations with local NGOs, youth organizations, and other external stakeholders. Knowledge Management and Reporting
  • Review and summarize relevant documents, strategies, research and reports on gender equality, youth engagement and advocacy.
  • Maintain and update databases of youth and gender-related stakeholders and initiatives.
  • Support UN reporting processes related to gender equality and advocacy efforts, as required.
  • Perform other related tasks as requested by management.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Studies in communications/advocacy is desired. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Good knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams and Excel; familiarity with digital and AI communication tools is an advantage. Strong and demonstrated interest in gender equality and women’s empowerment is desirable. Good understanding of communication and advocacy process and tools and ability to work with diverse groups of people, including youth and civil society actors is desirable. Previous engagement in youth activities, volunteering or student organizations is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Macedonian and Albanian is desirable.

The intern must have access to a computer and reliable internet connection. The UN Mission will provide access to necessary software and databases.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
