Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies, Funds and Programs. This Internship is located in the Digital and Compliance Unit (DCAU) within the Service and Information Security Management Section (SISMS), under the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) at UNGSC in Valencia, Spain. The Intern will report to the Chief of the Unit. The intern will support the team on the "UNGSC - Post-DANA DR Capabilities Enhancement" Project, contributing to the goal of shifting from manual recovery planning to automated, validated resilience. Tasks will include: 1. Support Disaster Recovery (DR) Operations & Planning: a. Assist in the review and update of Information System Contingency Plans (ISCPs) to ensure alignment with current infrastructure. b. Help identify gaps between the defined Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and actual technical capabilities. c. Support the coordination of the Disaster Recovery Exercises (DRX), tracking pass/fail metrics and lessons learned. 2. Contribute to Resilience Automation: a. Support the validation of automated recovery workflows to ensure they execute correctly without manual intervention. 3. Support Resilience Dashboards & Visualization: a. Build interactive PowerBI dashboards to provide real-time visibility into the "DR Readiness" of all mission-critical services. b. Visualize testing coverage metrics to ensure all Service Owners are compliant with mandatory testing cycles. 4. Leverage Generative AI for Continuity Assurance: a. Research and support the use of GenAI tools to automatically parse system configurations and generate updated DR "Runbooks" (reducing documentation fatigue). b. Explore AI-driven predictive analytics to forecast potential capacity bottlenecks during a failover scenario. 5. Contribute to Documentation and Standardization: a. Assist in maintaining the Service Continuity Library, ensuring that all critical assets have valid, accessible recovery documentation.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). The field of studies must be closely related to Cybersecurity & Information Security, Computer Science & IT, Data Science & Analytics and/or Engineering & Technology. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Knowledge of disaster recovery, cybersecurity frameworks, and standards is desirable. Experience with AI/ML for security operations and proficiency in PowerBI or similar visualization tools are desirable. Programming skills in languages such as Python or Java are desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
